I wanted to check out the version of the Adobe Flash player installed on my computer.

Couldn't find it.

Searched in Application folder (the Quicktime player is there).

I can visit flash sites, so it must be there.

Where is it, and why doesn't it show up in searches? Only the Adobe Flash install manager shows. Is Adobe Flash inside the manager?

Also each browser has a way to show installed plug-ins. Safari's is Help > Installed Plug-ins.

Yet another reason why Apple's decision to hide the Library folders is so stupid.

They didn't hide /Library, /System/Library nor /Network/Library.

Open System Preferences and select the Flash player section. It has a tab where you can check for updates.

Ok. I wouldn't know, it's too early for me to update. Waiting for 10.7.1.

Is this new? I don't have a Flash section in Snow Leopard System Preferences, though there is Perian and Flip4Mac, of course.

Yes.
Everyone should really be running the latest version of Flash Player. Previous versions have serious security issues.

Check your Flash Player version here:

Um, what? Where is this? There's never been Flash preferences other than when you right click Flash media in a browser.

Then you're not running the current version.

As much as I dislike flash, the pref pane is very convenient to keep updated.

Actually it is just "convenient" at most, since it doesn't tell you if you are up to date. It simply opens that same web page that tightsocks linked to, and then even that doesn't tell you if you are up to date. You have to compare the installed version number with the most current version number yourself. Why it is in Adobe's interest to make staying current so hard, I cannot understand.

At least with the preference pane you don't have to hunt for Flash content on a random website to find a place to right-click.

Flash Player *will* now check for updates (in non-specifiable intervals) and tell you there's a newer version available, and *then* bump you to the stupid download page.

The Flash pref pane, while extremely welcome, does not check, just as you say.

Under advanced, it has 'check for updates automatically', although I have it turned off.

It isn't in their interest.
But, it's Adobe. Their website is famous for being pretty opaque. There's definitely a lack of understanding about simplicity and a positive user experience on their website.

I have 10.3.181.35, the latest, and I have no preference pane and have never had one.

If you are using Chrome, and its internal version of Flash is current, the webpage will say everything is current, but your OS version could still be outta date. That happened to me. I had to switch to Safari, go to the Abode Flash page, and then it allowed me to update. Only then did I get the new pref panel.

10.3.181.35 is the Chrome-embedded version. The latest standard version is 10.3.181.34.

Bingo! Now I'm up to date and have the pref pane. Thanks!

Check your Flash Player version here:
Adobe - Flash Player
My version was out of date, and I installed the new version.

I could find it now in my search, but when I clicked on "Flash Player" it didn't show me the path to the folder where it was.

Secret location?

The Flash player is not an application, but a plugin. Applications that use it simply link themselves to it and supply an interface for it.
