The 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro Only Offers 83GB of Usable Space

The standard Windows 8 Surface tablets came in for some stick, thanks to the Windows files eating up 13GB of hard drive space. That's nothing compared to Windows 8 Pro, which requires an astonishing 45GB of the Surface Pro's disk space for its files.

The numbers, obtained from Microsoft by Softpedia, would make an absolute mockery of the 64GB version of the Surface Pro tablet if replicated there, with the machine possibly only having 19GB of space for users to use if Windows 8 eats up a similar chunk of drive space on the more affordable Pro option.
Hilarious.

I found a 14GB winsxs folder today. The rest of the Win 7 install was under 8GB.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

What a bloated piece of crap. Maybe it'll sell, whatever... I do like the competition for Apple though!

It's not even the 128 gig model that's the real problem.

The 64 gig Surface Pro has 23 gigs of usable disc space. This number has been confirmed by Microsoft themselves.

I don't even understand how that happens. How much space is on a 64 gig MacBook Air?

Mountain Lion is something like 8 gigs. The recover partition is like 700 megs. And even if you install all of the iWork apps you only add another gig on top of it.

So what the hell Microsoft? How is Windows 4 times the size of Mac OS?

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

The basic problem is that Windows 8 is really two operating systems: the traditional Windows OS, and the Modern tablet OS. Thus, the base install is huge.

Plus, the Surface Pro comes with an installed OS backup image in case the main OS is corrupted and needs re-installation. That's a good idea, and fortunately, you can remove it onto a USB drive and clear the space for your use.

Blah blah blah, add USB storage, delete partition, etc.

It's all still a pain in the ass.
