You could turn it on its side and do grilling on the heatsink. It's just about big enough.

Like the new heat sink. Could that mean dual across the line possibly? And with the heat sink, are the fans now inside that? And what's with all that friggin' space in the front? Lordy.

Perhaps they should have used the free space for extra hard drives.

Yeah, that is way too much free space going to waste. Apple could actually make a run at turning the G5 into a legitimate power house machine by adding some real storage expansion to it. But instead, they leave an empty space big enough to put a bag of potatoes in.

What I'm most concerned about is the 4 missing DIMM slots. I hope this isn't across the board. (No pun intended.)

Nah, this could (hopefully) be the low-end 7,3 G5 Power Mac, with the higher end 7,3 models having an 8-slotted mobo. However, a low-end G5 for the masses would be the updated 8,1 G5 iMac (or something similar).

oh man I don't like the looks of it. 4 ram slots? A GREEN motherboard? WTF is up with that huge heatsink?
I dunno.. the fact there's only one G5 emblem kinda makes me think this is a low end machine.. I HOPE.

Most likely the new G5 pic is a prototype and most Apple prototypes have different color motherboards in the different development stages. I have an old IIgs prototype that has a blue motherboard where the finals shipped green.

I thought that they would opt for multiple optical drives. My DVD-R/W/52X CDRW is fantastically useful in my MDD.

Haha..Ive never seen anything so stoopid in my life. WTF is that? It's the size of a Cube. Is it so they can stuff an overclocked CPU in there because IBM can't fab jacksh-t near 3Ghz?

I would bet good money that we will see the new G5 next week. A Rep from apple told us to make sure we report or G5 inventories at the end of the week, normaly they don't tell us that unless a new product is comming out.

Nah, the new G5's WILL BE announced at WWDC. It's too close to WWDC for Apple to do otherwise. They'll get tons of press that way. Apple's asking for numbers early because it's not like your gonna sell any of the current G5s at the current price.

Remember that the G5 memory deal, the G5 Cinema Display deal, the G5 .Mac deal, the G5 HP printer deal, and the G5 Director MX deal all end on the 26th.
Thus, no G5 announcement next week.

That empty space is absolutely unacceptable. It's so glaring that I'm guessing (hoping?) that something else goes there, maybe something very special? Is it possible that this drawing is simply missing some large component that goes there? Problem is that I don't see any sort of front face slots or mounting points...
There's no way in hell Apple could release something like this. So the question is: what's missing? What could go in that space? Can't be an optical drive, there are no openings in the front for them and I think with the RAM slots full, the space would be too short.
I'm at a loss to explain it. But if that's what they deliver, I'll be pissed.
One thing, though. I think that panel that says "G5" is a cover for what's underneath. Unlike the current model where that panel appears to be directly attached to the CPU/heatsink subassembly, I think that panel is somehow just a cover for that area. See how it seems to actually be the same piece as the shelf between the CPU bay and the PCI card bay? I have no idea how you'd remove it, but I don't think it's attached to the CPU heat sinks.

Heheh. Leave it to Apple to make the internals' aesthetics of tantamount importance to end users.
Anyways, it could just be that the mid and high end G5 mobo is wider, with 8 memory slots.

If I remember correctly, the current G5 logo plate is just a cover too, although it is attached to the heatsink assembly.

The "G5" is on the last plate of the heatsink

That's not quite correct IIRC. If you look closely on yours, you'll see that the G5 logo plate is also continous with a top and bottom plate, forming a 3-sided box. The heatsink sits inside it. See here.

Looking at the machines, I've also been able to determine that they're different machines for a few small resasons:
1. the serial number tag is different (the 'current' one has black letters while the prototype/new one has white letters)
2. The optical drive is different (this is noted by the 'thing' on the back of the new one's drive)
3. The new g5 does indeed, have a new video card (it does have grey ports vs black ports, so they're at least different.. looking at it closely reveals a different heatsink and a small piece of metal that's missing on the older g5.. this could simply be a different production of the same card though (most everything else is the same).
4. The new g5's board actually appears to be blue. It's raelly hard to say but chances are likely it could have been a camera goof up... but that one pict where you see the machine's side directly it does look very blue.
Anyway, a set of things that I find odd are how the bottom of the case/top of power supply doesn't seem to line up against the edges of the case, something I always thought was so. There's alsop the fact the cable coming out of the power supply is just.. ODD.
The fan module on the back isn't attatched to the heatsink but IS pushed up against it. I dunno but the total lack of incoming air to the processors just doesn't sound right to me, as typically manufacturers want as much air going in as coming out.

I have the scoop. The empty space is for the powerbook G5. They are going to bring this thing out at WWDC, open it up and pull out the powerbook G5. It's a perfect plan.
