Safari has been VERY stable on my iMac Flatscreen until about a week ago. Now when I use it ... it will sometimes take me to my URL and let me navigate a little OR it will 'poof' at my arrival at the URL. It does this with ALL URLs - not URL specific.

I used the search to find all Safari folders, etc. and trashed them - then reloaded Safari and it does the same thing. All other browsers I have continue to work flawlessly.

What's up? What do I do? Is the a better way to uninstall Safari and start over again?

I am using a Powerbook via Airport on the same router and it's Safari remains stable and fine, as are the browsers.

I'm stumped! Thanks for any help in advance.

It's been doing that to me too, lately. I didn't install any updates or modify configurations. Sometimes I'll be happily browsing along, when suddenly *POOF* it goes away.

I used to encounter that occasionally, but it was certain bizarre sites.
I've not (knock wood) had it happen since moving to Tiger 10.4.3 (and Safari 2.02).

Please look at "About Safari" under the Safari menu and tell us what version you have.

OS X 10.4.3, Safari 2.0.2

It happens on both my iBook and Mac Mini as of late.

did u go into your user library/preferences and delete

com.apple.Safari.plist

try that.

also....try creating a test user account & see if safari works (or crashes) there...

I'm still not entirely clear, but I'll assume "poof" means "unexpectedly quit."

Deleting the prefs is not a bad idea. Your user library folder is in your home folder, called "Library". Inside is a folder called "Preferences" and the file in there called "com.apple.safari.plist" is Safari's preferences.

No, it means he got this error message:

YOU should be designing the error screens!

I'm also having Safari unexpectedly quit on me a lot.
Seem to do it with some sites that I can visit and it will always do it.
Microsoft Office clip art was one but I don't know why.

Why? Couldn't it be the poison-pill MS puts in sites to mess w/Safari?

Could be, but I think it's just M$'s poor programming confusing Safari.

in your home folder:library.

(it's where all your prefs, settings, mail, bookmarks, etc are stored)

Sorry fisherking - found that and dealt with it - still no-go!

Now the computer will not allow a download to be installed. That because I had updated the Safari version I had on there (and thrown away)?

I'm wondering, if I reinstall the OS - not a clean install - just a reinstall ... I wonder if that might fix a glitch somewhere that is causing this? Hmmm. ???

have u tried creating a 'test' user account, and trying safari there?
will at least let u know if the problem is related to your account, or is system-wide...

fisherKing: I'm all ears! What is/how do I make a 'test user's account?'

I've got all the hardware ... so how does one do it?

^you simply create a new user account in the Accounts preferencepane. Allow the user to have access to apps. Logout from your current user and login with the newly created user account.

You know, 'poofing' IS a very dangerous thing whether it's Safari, docks, e-mails, or especially applications!

I'm 60 1/2 ... been into Macs shortly after Al Gore invented the net ( ) and it's gotten to be an EGO thing with me when things go POOF and I can't figure out WHY!!!

... isn't there some kind of RULE or LAW that says at SOME POINT the ELECTROMAGNETIC GODS will stop messin with greyheads and SHOW US THE LIGHT!??

... all the light I ever see is this passive light on my Powerbook ... when it's awake, anyway!

AAARRRGGGHHH!

After upgrading to 10.3.9 (and Safari in the process) I had trouble with Safari "poofing" away (crashing) after reaching various websites.

I repaired permissions and noticed that some of the repairs involved Safari. Safari has been MUCH more stable since I did that. YMMV, of course.

My safari poofed all the time. The culprit for me was speed download (v. 3.0) I deleted ~/Library/InputManagers/SpeedDownload Enhancer

and all seems to be better.

So did mine ! In the end I couldn't figure out what else to delete so I trashed the contents of /Users/myaccount/Library/Safari and lo and behold, it works again !

FYI: I deleted the two plist files shown below..
Code:
peter-garners-ibook-g4:~/Library/Safari peterg$ ls -l total 56 -rw-r--r-- 1 peterg peterg 22048 Apr 9 19:25 Bookmarks.plist -rw-r--r-- 1 peterg peterg 247 Apr 9 19:26 History.plist
I switched :-)
