If they open in Quicktime then you can just go ...

File > Save As

There's a better way.

Go to the webpage, let the video start to load.
In Safari, fo to Window>Activity.

You'll see a long list of pretty much everything that needed to be loaded on the page. Just about every time, your video is the largest one in this list, so scroll to find it.

Double click it.

It'l open, or download, in a new window. Sometimes if it opens are a window, in the case of Youtube (they are flv files,) let the window fully download what appears to be garbled text, then, when it's done, File>save as> anything.FLV

Sound good?

Does that really work? I mean, have you tried it?

I tried that and it didn't work.

There just has to be an easier way. How do so many CNN videos end up on YouTube? How are these people doing it?!

Does work.

Instead of double clicking it, select the file from the list in the Activity window, press Command C and then open the Download window and press Command V

You'll need Perian to watch it with QuickTime. Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime® components

I assure you that based on my collection of youtube files, it does indeed work.

Possible errors you're making:
Sometimes you have to put a .flv at the end of files, sometimes not. I haven't figured out the reason for that.

Also, you need a player capable of supporting .flv, I use VLC media player.

If you still don't believe me after checking those things, I'll do a snapz screen record of me doing it, put it on youtube, and you can download that.

I assure you, my way is pretty much the best solution, and it's free.

What do you do with the .flv file once it's downloaded? I can play it in the preview of the info pane, but how do I get it on iTunes?

You need to convert it using QuickTime Pro or any other app that uses QuickTime to a format that iTunes will accept.

Well, I'm making progress but am not there yet.

I can download the flv files, and iSquint does convert them; however, the audio on the resulting mp4 file is corrupt. You can hear it, but it sounds like it's been spliced with the sound of broken glass... Lots of electronic beeps, bleep and crackles.

What's up?

What settings are you using?

Maybe try different settings -- for tv, for ipod, h.264 on/off, etc.

Yes, I've tried variations of all the above settings. Still getting garbled audio.

I really wanna do this. Why is it so darn difficult?

What—can no one save a CNN video to their mac in a format that will play in iTunes?

I'm going freaking nuts here!!

Ha ha ha ha haha ha! I did it!

Here's how:

1. Play video at CNN.com.
2. Window > Activity.
3. Find, double click and download.
4. Import to iMovie.
5. Export to Quicktime.
6. iSquint: Optimize for iPod
7. Change extension to m4v

It works.

Booyeah!
