For some reason when I empty the trash on my desktop, it takes forever. It counts down each item it empties, generlly taking 2-3 seconds for each item. This is particularly frustrating when there are 150+ items in there.
Maybe it just takes this long, but I seem to remember it going a hell of a lot faster. Any ideas on what , if anything, can be done to speed it up?
Thanks!

run disk utility, and fix permissions, also fsck the disk in single user mode.

Have you run any disk optimization tools? If your systems are old, heavy fragmentation of the drive is very likely.

do you remmeber what you installed before this happened?
Do this reboot and hold the shift key to have ALL extensions turned off, if deleting goes about normal they you have a software problem, if not you might have a system problem or possible hard drive problem/directory problem,. get back to me after you do this.
