Hey, I'm new here, kinda a bit of a car nut...don't know if any of you are, but this is pretty cool...

BMW M5's Drive System Details

7 speed, 5.0 Liter V10, 8250 RPM Redline. Wooo, closest street car (under about $100,000...I'm sure an Enzo or many other supercars are closer but still) to an F1 racecar.

"...Compared to the previous SMG transmission, changing gears is 20 per cent faster with the new SMG generation..."

Yikes!!

Although if they are only offering the SMG, you're going to get a lot of backlash from the diehards.

Whoa dude! Now you can even more power to drive around at a velocity of 35 mph up to incredible 80 mph on the highway!! And you can pollute the air even more than before, ain't that great?
I don't even dare to imagine how much better that engine would make my life would I be stuck in a traffic jam! YAY!

Dude... it's an M5. Not a commuter car. Yes you could drive to and from work in this, but it's actually more likely to be used in racing.

Right... the car to drive to and from work would be the 6l engine SUV/truck/van, right?

I'm just sayin' that the M5 is a car that can be seen on the streets everywhere (at least in Europe, in particular in Germany). Hence it's not only used for racing, that was my point (I guess).

The engine maybe... but it doesn't say anything about what car they're going to shove it in.

I've seen tons and tons of m5s on the street. They are NOT track cars.... which is why they have a nice interior, room for 4 and a huge trunk. Track cars would be something like the RX7s, elises, etc. The m5 is simply the ULTIMATE sedan, for the street.

The Ultimate Sedan... just after the RS6. Sorry, I'm biased... I used to work for Audi.

That's great, but there are many cars faster than the m5 on that track. The m5 is a fast STREET CAR, that is competent on the track.

REAL track cars do NOT have leather, a/c, 4 seats, etc etc etc.

This is a REAL track car:

And it would handily kick a BMW m5's ass in.

I'm sure BMW learned a few things from working on these:

New M5 should be a fun car.

You could say the same thing about the Bugatti Veyron. But the ///M5 is an actual production car that I have actually seen on the road.

This seems to be purely a matter of symantics. But, I must enter the discussion nonetheless. I have been passed by more than one M5 on the race track. But, this does not qualify it as a "track car," per se. If someone tells me they have a "track car," that means a not necessarily street-legal car that is either a modified sports car or a purpose-built race car. I don't think I would call ANY unmodified street car a "track car."

This is a track car:

So is this:

Let it burn.
