Wow, a 1.6 the lowest prime time in history...

I can't believe that many people watched that show...

Thank God. The XFL was the biggest failure and crap on TV.

YAY! I watched it once and never again. I'm glad to have been a part of the failure of the XFL.

With the Downfall of the XFL people shouldn't complain that Football Players make too much money. They gave us an alternative and no one watched it. So no one should complain that NFL players make too much money.

Out of curiosity does anyone know why the XFL failed? I am sure that it's not because the players weren't being paid millions. I never watched so I wouldn't know...

The XFL was a made-for-television league. It wasn't ticket sales they were after; it was the TV ad revenue. But nobody was watching; one game was the lowest-rated TV show ever to air in prime time on a major network. Low ratings mean they have to charge low prices for ads, which means they were going to lose money hand over fist if they tried a second season.

Plus, the word-of-mouth was so negative it was a public relations fiasco for NBC.

Your right, and it's too bad. I liked the whole concept behind the XFL. I was really hoping it would catch on.

While I don't like football, I was curious about the XFL hype, but was never able to watch it because:

a. The games were on at weird-ass times
b. The schedule kept on changing to the point where I didn't know when I could watch it
c. They picked times to show the games when I am out, which brings be back to A and B.

So I've never seen one game of XFL and it's already dead. I wonder how many people are in my boat.

watched the first game and that was enough. And it's not that I don't like suffering -- I've been a New York Giants fan for most of my life. Now that I'm in Florida, I feel obligated to follow the Dolphins -- but only half-heartedly. The XFL just seemed way too contrived. The players weren't as bad as I expected, but the announcers and the hype and the weird camera angles were a little too much.

I was going to bet money that it would be gone after 1 season, but I decided not to... Damn! Should have bet $1,300 so I could get a new machine.

When it gets right down to it - they played a poor brand of football. And all the media hype and funky camera angles can't make up for a bad product on the field.

As a sporting event there was no quality and as a TV show there was no suspense or drama.

When the WWF went public Vince McMahon made a billion dollars. I'm glad to see he can't peddle his crap to everyone.

jholmes hit the nail on the head... the XFL was simply bad football. I watched the first game out of curiosity, but after seeing how poorly they played, I never wanted to watch it again. I couldn't care less about the cheerleaders (whatever), the camera angles (stupid), the on-field taunts (stupid), the locker-room cameras (who cares what the coach is saying when both he and his team sucks).

They also really hyped up how much more "violent" and "intense" the XFL would be compared with the NFL... I didn't see a single, impressive hit in that first game. Usually there are at least a few in each NFL game...

Anyway, garbage all around. I'm glad its gone. Proof that the American television viewing audience aren't as stupid as advertisers like to think (and, admittedly, they're often right).

Through an odd coincidence on my first ever trip to Las Vegas last January I happened to end up at the XFL launch party being held in the Hard Rock Casino. The party was on a Sunday at the beginning of a week of television conventions, and so at the launch were a bunch of TV-types without any football types. In fact, at the party there was nothing geared towards football: on the big screen just lots mugs of Jesse Ventura and larger-than-life cheerleaders.

Always meant to catch a game, but I hear I didn't miss anything.

T

PS Don't forget the XFL played a bigger part in the Schwartzenegger movie The 6th Day than in NBC's or UPN's rating.

How was this "extreme football"? I bet you those players joined so that they have a shot at the NFL.

The announcers were always making it out to be better than it was, like showing clips of "bone crunching" hits that were nothing more than gang tackles you see every down in the NFL.

I laughed a few times, once a guy was tackled and hurt, he was helped off the field. Jesse Ventura said "OOHHH!!! That was a hit! Let's hope his team wins so he gets that extra $5000, he'll need it for his medical bills!!" LOL! Yeah OK Jesse, whatever.

I actually thought the on field camera was kind of neat, letting you see the game from a player's perspective. Too bad the play mostly sucked... oh well. It's nice to see Vince lose some money.

Now if only the NFL could go RIP aswell, then we could free up some air time for real football (soccer to most of you)
