I have a new Nokia 8290! Its SOOOOOOO COOL!

I can hold down a button on the microphone bit on the headset and it will beap. Then I can say the name of the person I want to call (as long as it has a voice tag recorded in my address book!)

TRULY HANDS FREE! ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL!
And its SO TINY!

Oh, and the best part is that I get unlimited Night and Weekend minutes from Cingular!

Sorry, I didn't mean to brag, just expressing extreme happiness.

I have the same feature on my Samsung phone with Sprint PCS. They call it voice dialing, but Cingular probably calls it something else. By the way, avoid Sprint PCS like the damn plague from hell. That company suks. Their customer service sucks and their Digital PCS system sucks even more. I have so many dropped calls with them it's not even funny.

i like the 3390 better. the 8290...im afraid ill swallow it or something. nokias make the best phones imho. they have great clarity and volume. now if they werent making phones for such a crappy carrier. pac bell sucks! theyre still using pods for transmission. so many dropped calls everywhere.

I have a Nokia 8890 GSM phone with Cingular. It's great. When I went into Europe, it switched carriers seamlessly from city to city. GSM rules. America's cell phone infrastructure sucks.

GSM Digital is the best just like Australia, Nokias are great very clear good reception, its a pity to be able to achive this, nokias release the most radiation.

lemme guess...youre anti-cell phone? cell phones arent evil. you gotta have one for work. you know...when you call your coworker while still on the way to work and asking if your boss has noticed if youre gone.

I think cell phones are a great modern technology, but unfortunately, the mentality of the people who made them a "fad" are the people I loath.

And WTF is up with those stylized rings? Those annoy the **** out of me, I ALWAYS hear atleast one phone go off with a stupid MIDI-like tune everytime I go to the movies.

have an 8260, like the 8290, no voice dialing

but it's a great phone, i use it mostly with an earpiece,
and i have developed VERY GOOD manners with it.
att wireless in nyc is..decent.
it is now my ONLY phone (as my business is wherever i am at any moment)

Has anybody tried pulling that thing apart and fit the circuitry and the buttons inside the sole of a shoe or something? Instant shoe-phone!!!

How would you do to charge the batteries?

Nokia makes shitty phones! They look nice and are easy to operate, but are crap. Almost all my friends have a Nokia and at some time or another (sometimes only a few days after they bought it) it had to be repaired. Most often faulty screen.

I have a Motorola d460. It's from 1995. Hell, it's almost the same age as the WWW! But it still works, has NEVER needed service and does exactly what is expected from it.

IMO very easy and simple to operate.

I will never buy a Nokia. I've seen too many problems with them.

Yep, I second the statement that Nokias are not very good phones... I've went through three of them in a year and a half before switching to a Samsung 8500 about a year ago. Nothing but good experiences with it... and, yes, it has voice activated dialing, too... *ooo*

my roommies (2) & some of my friends have nokia 8260's...
(in fact i made cool stickers for the backs)
no problems, we like them.
small, sound good, "user-friendly"...

anyone watch futurama? where amy swallowed another mobile phone (because they were so small)...?

she didnt actually swallow the phone...not in the episode anyway.

I would have to agree that Nokia phones suck. I have that same 8290 or whatever, and cannot get good reception anywhere. I know nokia engineer, and he basically told me that this was one of the worst phones that they have come out with...

I want my Motorola back...

its not the phone. its pac bell. pac bell sucks nuts imo. my friends get zero reception in their new apartment with sprint and pac bell and verizon gets full reception. nokie phones are actually really good phones in terms of transmitting volume and clarity of the voice...when theres reception.

I am thinking about switching to Nextel. I have seen their Motorola phones and they are great. I have heard great things from their customers about the services. Anyone here use them and would care to comment on Nextel for me?

Still using my trusty Nokia 6210 with Orange.
Very cool and not too small - I'm a big chap with big hands and those mini-phones just feel too easy to break, plus I'd lose it in my backpack.
Does everthing I need it to, and not too much either. Have you ever seen those horrific Nokia 9110 Organiser things, how are you meant to carry that?
Plus it's got IR on it which is great for my Powerbook.
Just use it for texting mainly, and my ring tone is very plain. (if I want people to know what music I like, I'll turn my MP3 player up full on the underground.)
Oh and it let's you put a custom graphic on it - currently I have a 'Porn Star' Logo on it, which causes many a chuckle at work.

hmm... well with this phone, the antenna is internal so using it inside of a building can be next to impossible. I had a Motorola before this, and had no problems where now I do have problems.

True, PacBell (Cingular) has its days, but I still think it's the phone...

i don't LOVE my nokia 8260, or anything.
it is, after all, just a...phone.
but it works pretty well indoors & out, & i live in manhattan.

if i can use it in midtown (& i USUALLY can), the phone's good.

my erricson hated midtown...

I've got a Nokia 5190 that I got back in Feb. and it was working great up until this week. Now it drops calls, bad reception, and it just isn't working good anymore.

Replace your antenna, common error.
I have a 6210 now, very decent phone and better than the 8XXX series which are a little fragile and have less reception.
The 6210 is one of the best products from nokia at the moment but it is a little larger than the 8XXX series.
Displays are a weak point .

Before this, I had a Motorola TimePort L7--- (forgot exact number...) It was the most obscure and rare phone in the world... I hated it. Sure it was durable... (I could throw it at people and have it ricochet off walls and still be able to call 911

) but everything about it sucked...

I love my Nokia 8290... Great reception, Cingular service is great. and its SMALL! Even smaller than the 8260 (Which is TDMA, btw... not GSM)

In regards to the person who said something about the Nokia engineer... are you sure he didn't mean the 8890? As far as I have heard, the 8890 has the worst reception, not the 8290.

I shall now go abuse my unlimited night and weekend minutes

I had a Nextel phone for three years, and the signal was lousy. But now that I've switched to Cingular, I'm finding out that this is true no matter what service you have. Most resident HAVE to get cable. You can get perfect reception if you live East, West, and South (North is the mountains) of the area. But in this weird Bermuda triangle like area, nothing but static. And cell phones don't work to well in certain parts of the city either. There's just weird stuff like that around the world.

My mom's nextel doesn't get reception ANYWHERE... It rarely works, and when it does, it's staticy and unreliable. I HIGHLY recommend Verizon, Cingular, or AT&T (Cingular because it uses GSM) over Nextel...

Thanks for the advice on Nextel. I may reconsider my future plans. Cingular uses GSM? Isn't that the Global signal thing? Sorry, I am not up to par about the cellular business and all the acronyms. I might check them out.

GSM: Global System for Mobile communication.

GSM is basically TDMA with enhanced features like SMS, etc... As far as I know, Cingular is the only Nationwide GSM provider.

GSM is good because it is a Worldwide standard, but there are 4 different bands, only one or 2 of which are used in the US, 800 and 1900, I believe. The other ones that are used worldwide are 900 and 1800 (I think)

The Nokia 8290 is single-band (1900) but the 8890 is Dual-band (800 & 1800)

I just checked out www.cingular.com and they are not in the area of Virginia that I live in... bummer. From what I am hearing, it is a good company.

It's pretty cheap, too. I am on the 30 USD per month plan and I get 150 anytime minutes and unlimited Night and Weekend minutes! (8pm-7am)
