I'm setting up an iPod for the first time--a present to my wife who keeps taking my CDs with her in the car so I can't find them. We have probably 500 CDs that I want to rip to 192 kbs mp3s. I know, I know AAC is better but my car stereo plays mp3 discs so I like to make those up custom sometimes.

I'm never going to buy anything from the iTMS either. Well, maybe an audiobook or two. Don't want to rerip what I have so far either. I've got about 18G in various iTunes Music folders around the house and it seems like I haven't done very many of our records at all.

Yeah, there's some downloaded stuff in there but very little actually--I hate not having the uncompressed redbook file. And our stereo notices upsampled mp3s. Especially next to the vinyl. For a really egregious example listen to the Buzzcocks' "Why Can't I Touch It" on vinyl back to back with the CD or iPod or whatever.

So, if you could tell me:

1. How big is your iTM folder?
2. How many songs, and what format/bitrate?
3. How many albums?
4. How I'm a thief and I'm going to hell for having downloaded music on a hard drive.

Just kidding about that last one.
The good news? I'm just kidding, she's dead.

Thank you, I'm happy to see your numbers--especially since you all use higher bitrates.

Gotta love these forums--three useful replies in an hour.

11.81 GB

2,610 Songs

Bit rates from 128 to 965, with the overwhelming majority being 128.

I'll be resampling all my CD's in 320. We'll see what that does to the memory.

12261 songs, 52,65GB most at 128kbps AAC. It says 1768 albums but that's not accurate at all since I have a lot of songs that are just 1 of an album an so it it's calculated as an entire album even it's just one song. 75% of that music is legal (well everything in AAC is legal).

13245 songs, 38.1 days, 62.96 GB

90% of it is 160 kbps AAC. Rest is mostly 192 Kbps MP3, that I ripped before and haven't gotten around to converting to AAC yet.

Dunno how many albums... maybe 900 or so.

Not hard to keep track of. Rated most of it with stars, and "search" works pretty well ;-) I've had most of the CDs for a LONG time, so I know whether I own the music.

It's 1139 albums... so average around $10 a cd... damn. I must admit, I'm a college student, currently living on campus with access to iTunes music sharing.

1) It's 3.7 MB, I don't keep my music in my iTunes folder

2) Total library size was: as of November 28 of last year. It's bigger now. Format is only MP3s, I never rip my own stuff in anything else, and don't download in anything else. It's still the most portable sound format.

3) Not sure at the moment. I did a count at one point.

4) All mine are legal, according to Canadian law, not that I really give a damn. My gigantic CD and record collection speaks for itself.

1779 songs, 7.6 d, 12.25 GB, 576 albums (mostly singles)

The majority are 160 KBPS, although there are quite a number of 128 KBPS and 192 KBPS files. I even have 96 KBPS and 224 KBPS files too.

Of the 1779 songs, 300 are 128 KBPS AAC. Not bad for a 60 GB drive filled with apps, movies, and pictures (18 GB free).

No idea how many albums
majority 160 AAC.

I've got about 2/3s of my CDs ripped now, and have bought probably 20 albums from ITMS.

1,467 songs @ 128kbs AAC
198 albums*
5.04 GB

* I buy a lot of songs off iTunes, mostly one or two from an album here or there, so the number of albums I have isn't entirely accurate.

Wow, the amount of music a few of you have is amazing. Thanks for all the replies. I guess eventually I'm really going to have to pay the premium and get the biggest iPod available for myself.

20,824 songs (a few duplicates) using 96.71 GB on an external 120GB FW drive. This includes most of my LP records recorded to CD and then transferred to iTunes. I've been collecting music for over 40 years. I now play my collection on my stereo with Airport Express every day (I am retired).

2250 songs have no clue how many albums probably like 30 or 40 and the rest are songs that I like no interludes or anything like that they are all songs. It is 8.98 GB and most at a 128 bit rate.

1. My Music directory is 17.65 GB. Mostly new age, world music, and video game soundtracks. It's not the largest collection here, but it might be the most eclectic.

2. Approximately 3000 songs, MP3 and some OGG, ripped mostly at 256 Kb/sec.

3. Not sure.

4. I've bought about $100 worth of music at Allofmp3.com (that gets you a lot of music!). I've downloaded stuff from Usenet and Limewire I couldn't find elsewhere. I've bought a few real CDs, but I won't touch anything with "RIAA" on it. Plus CDs are way too expensive!

9003 songs right now, about 45GB of music. About 360 playlists, most of it ripped, a very good portion from the iTMS and some from Audible.com. About 4 songs pulled from filing sharing back in the Napster days.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.
