Just downloaded the latest version of Transmission, within 30 seconds the blue frog was in the trash.

Transmission is good looking and fast, you can even get it to auto start torrents when you download the file in safari, the best thing is its a real Mac program not some clunky java / windows app.

If you haven't switched give it a try.

@moonmonkey: you probably mean Transmission, which is a BitTorrent client, and certainly not Transmit. which is an FTP client, right?

Get your thread corrected.

I've fixed the thread title. Good catch.

I'm still partial to Azureus though.

Azureus is loaded with functionality, however Transmission is a beautiful, lightweight app and that's why it wins... at least for me ;-)

BitTorrent Curses (CLI) + screen = the second best, Newzbin + hellanzb + my giganews account + screen = the best

Isn't PeerGuard/PeerGuardian a set of firewall rules? If so, this covers your entire system, not just particular applications.

Yes, PeerGuardian is system-wide. SafePeer is a plugin for Azureus that rejects connections with blacklisted IP's.

CLI FTL IMO.

Anyway, I agree with the OP. I'd been using Azureus for quite some time, but Transmission has quickly won me over by being simple and lightweight (and that annoying must-force-quit issue is already solved too).

Azureus is the most aggressive BT client I've used. I've tried many others in the past, but I've had the best speeds downloading with Azureus.

Granted, I haven't tried Transmission for about a year, so ... downloading now. :-P

What does FTL mean? For the loss? Why would you say that without knowing what sorts of advantages the CLI offers?

I say that because I'm not aware of any advantages the command line offers. Well, that and it seems to make managing torrents more of a hassle.

The same thing happened to me just the other day when Transmission went final (1.0). The frog was useful while it lasted, but now that there is a fully-featured, lightweight Mac bittorrent app, there is no point to the frog.

My biggest gripe with it was the screen real-estate that it gobbled up.

I am pleased with Transmission.

The lack of robust queue settings, no support for DHT, settings to dynamically maximize upload bandwidth, and zero ability to edit torrents with multiple trackers have me sticking with Azureus.

For those who simply need a lightweight client with a smaller feature set, Transmission's come a long way. Still not enough for me to use it on a full time basis and dump Azureus however.

I have just Downloaded Transmission, as i hear that it is far superior to Azureus. However i have hit a small snag! I cant find where the option is to select the file destination. I usually have a fair few torrents going at a time and usually to various different directories - thus allowing me to keep my external drive relatively tidy.

The closest i can find is in: preferences > Transfers > General. In here changing the first drop down menu to: Always ask me. But when i attempted to ass a .torrent to the list it required me to put in the tracker url which i'm usually not to sure on until the download starts.

Until this can be figured out i must stick to Azureus otherwise i will end up with files all over the place!

The tracker url has nothing to do with the directory you wish to move the completed download into (the first pop-up menu).

The tracker url is contained in the torrent file, unless you've downloaded a file off a site where people use a private tracker, AFAIK.

I'm not a fan of the VUZE crap they've added. I turn it off.

BitTyrant is pretty much a clone of Azureus pre-VUZE, with some minor changes.

ive been looking a new bittorrent client since Azureus has become so convoluted -the whole Vuze thing is so annoying. how does one turn it off?
re Transmission, any suggestions for speed? Azureus gave me a 50kps avg (at home, 150 at the office) but Transmission can;t even peak over 20. I never run more than 2 torrents and i generally dont use the macbook or the internet whilst downloading.
thanks

I tried Transmission again, this time a solid nightly build in order to fix an error mentioned in the MacUpdate.com comments. I don't get even 20% of the download speed that I get with Azureus.

I need to do a solid file transfer test from different trackers before I can decide, but so far no one has ever been able to hold a candle to the download speeds of Azureus.

It also does a lot of sorting for me, plus I can throttle it's speed based on time (since here in Aus they like to operate with peak/off-peak download quotas )

Yes, my torrents auto-load in Azureus. But please, tell me how I can turn that Vuze community BS off!
