I have a Quad Core 3.0 Mac Pro version 1.0 (See my sig for details) which originally came with an ATI 1900XT, which I have since changed over to an Nvidia card... well, literally a couple of days after the 1 yr warranty on the card expired, the card went out. So my question is.. are there upgraded cards that will work on my version of the MacPro? The Apple store only sells cards for the newer models..

if someone can link me a card or pm me a place to get one, I'd very much appreciate it.
Mac Pro 3.0, ATI 5770 1GB VRAM, 10GB, 2xVelociraptor boot RAID, 4.5TB RAID0 storage, 30" & 20" Apple displays.
2 x Macbook Pro's 17" 3.06 4 GB RAM, 256GB Solid State drives
iMac 17" Core Duo 1GB RAM, & 2 iPhones 8GB, and a Nano in a pear tree!

Also, if it helps, I do run dual DVI monitor output... so I can't use the 4870 PC version cards.. I've looked into that. thanks.

I'm curious as well...it seems Apple screwed us early adopters. Gotta love an upgradable Mac with no compatible (video) upgrades available.

cgc, after doing quit a bit of googling on it, I am thinking you're correct.. This is utterly unacceptable btw.. when Apple was an obscure brand that a few people owned, I understood, but Mac's as a brand are outselling most PC brands except big names like Dell... there is no excuse.

Wasn't the ATI 4870 supposed to work with the Mac Pro 1.1 models in spite of what the Apple Store claims?

Have you tried to contact Nvidia or Apple about the dead 8800?.

Anyhow, isn't a possibility someone can come with the typical PC flashed card and get it working on a 1st rev. Mac Pro?, just curious as I just bought a Nvidia FX5200 PCI 256 MB for an old Yosemite PCI G3 Power Mac and it screams, seriously.

I think only one of the two DVI ports on the ATI is dual-link, but what would fit your setup, right?.

BTW, did your Nvidia 8800 beep before dying?.

What do you mean dual link? I think from everything I read, the 4870 doesn't support dual monitors, is that incorrect? I'd be happy to buy it from the over priced apple store if I can use both my 20 and 30" display.

Dual-link DVI is what you need to drive the 30" ACD. What I didn't suspect was the other port is actually a Mini Display port…  It's been the same all along?.

mac 4870 is DVI + MDP only. you can get a PC version 1GB XFX 4870 for around $150 and flash it, which would give you dual-link and a single-link port, which is what's needed for your setup.

that's what i'll be doing with my mp 1,1.

everything you need to know about flashing a PC 4870 can be found here. people even flash 4890s:

Hello UnixMac,

I have plenty of friends with 1st Generation MacPro computers that recommend this card.
