Apple has revealed its 2015 Christmas ad, titled
"Someday at Christmas" after a 1967 song by Stevie Wonder, on its YouTube channel. The spot stars Wonder and singer Andra Daye, who duet on the piece while portraying an African-American family at Christmas, with kids running around and holiday decorations deployed. Unlike most recent Apple ads, the TV commercial does not feature any product or service, though Wonder, who has been blind since early childhood, can be seen mixing the track on a MacBook, using VoiceOver in Garageband.
The original song was a plea for peace at Christmas in the late 1960s, a time of war in Vietnam, rising poverty at home and abroad, spreading hunger, and continuing civil rights protests. The version in the new ad comes across much more as a sentimental Yuletide song, with Wonder and Daye taking turns singing verses before harmonizing (beautifully) on the chorus. The ad ends with the addition of the word "love," before the iconic Apple logo appears.
The ad will touch hearts in much the same manner as last year's memorable holiday spot,
"The Song," where a granddaughter finds and enhances -- using Apple software and hardware -- a song recorded by her grandmother during wartime. Apple
won a Creative Arts Emmy for its 2013 holiday ad, "Misunderstood," about a teenager during the holidays who appears to be buried in his iPhone, but is in fact creating and editing a holiday video for the family.
