Hello, I just ordered a DC G5 2.0 ghz and since the waiting times were too long for the 7800 I decided to just the the 256 6600. I soon as they shipped the thing(it's on it's way) the shipping time for the 7800 dropped to 2-3 days.

I just want to make sure that Apple will sell this card separately so I can just add it later.

I what are the chances that ATI will come out with a high end card I can use with Motion?

Also I've been running Motion on a 12 in Powerbook with a fx5200 how much of a difference will the 256 6600 do for Motion and core Image?

I hope they get these cards out quick so I can upgrade.

ATI has the X1800 which actually runs faster than the 7800. No idea if we'll see a Mac version. I think it's likely though.
8 Core 2.8 ghz Mac Pro/GF8800/2 23" Cinema Displays, 3.06 ghz Macbook Pro

As goMac said, ATi has the X1800. Depending on which edition of the X1800 Apple uses, it may be faster or slower than the 7800GT (which is 2 steps down from the fastest nVidia card). Then again, Apple may release one of the faster nVidia 7800 cards down the road.
Barefeats has a benchmark comparing the previous high-end ATi and nVidia cards in Motion (nVidia won).

What is the benefit of buying the 7800 over the 6600? I m preparing to buy a quad and am stuck on which card to get, or just by a card from a third party and add it myself. opinions/suggestions?

About 1200.

A couple benchmarks comparing the two (from Apple):

Barefeats reports a ~22% gain in Motion/iMaginator, and 105% increase in UT2004.

None. ATI has decided that they're not even going to try to compete. They're working on sandwiches instead.

It'll be a huge difference. The 5200 is very very slow, particularly at the pixel shader and float operations that Motion and Core Image rely on.

I've heard the ATI ham on rye is supposed to be very tasty
but the NVidia version digests faster.

Caveat emptor.
