Like most people here I have a lot of Dashboard Widgets. Problem is that a) having everything open is not an option and b) finding which one you need can be annoying at times. Due to these restrictions I find I use Dashboard not as often as I should/could.
The make better use of my widgets, this is what I do now: I now only search and activate widgets via Launchbar (Quicksilver/Butler/Spotlight are options as well). After use I close the widget.
Here a movie of how it works - hope you like it!

God tip I might start doing with quicksilver. I've actualy done that except I go directly to the desired widget.

sometimes I do too - but I have quite a number of widgets so I often forget its actual name. So I decided to put every widget in one folder and assign a hot-key to it in Launchbar and select it from there - much much faster than using the Dashboard dock.
I much say I like how Vista will handle gadgets by having an OSX-like dock for (see screenshot) This inspired me to use Launchbar for it.
