Slowly getting my breath back.....

I opened my 17" PB from sleep and the screen wouldn't turn on. I switched it off and rebooted and the proc started making weird noises and spat out the disk that was in the drive.

Then, after switching it off again, it started but there was a 3 inch blue stripe down the left hand side of the screen. The Apple Logo was pushed somewhat to the right.

Then, once it got into the log on screen, the screen was flickering all over the place and there were about 10 cursors all over the place.

I couldn't get any further.

I took the battery out and disconnected from the mains and then connected again and rebooted. After a long start up time, everything seems fine again.

Anyone have any ideas of what it might be?

I've had my 17" powerbook for a month now
and are experiencing something similar
to you...

But not with the mystic stripes:
In that month, these things have happened
when waking up from it's sleep:

1) Opening the powerbook as usual, but the
display wouldnt come on...I closed the lid
again and it went to sleep...opening the lid
and it still was black...hard resetting by pressing
down and holding the on/off button for 5 seconds.
Now it booted just fine.

2) A week later, the screen went "BLUE"!! (yes
this IS a powerbook) and blacked out and went
back to normal again. (I reset just to make sure nothing weird would happen after that)

3) Another week later...I opened it with a Black screen again. Just closing it and re-opening it
resolved that issue.

4) The same happened today (yet another week gone by)...but I solved it by
closing and opening the lid again.

Weird...some OSX 10.3.3 issue??!?

Strange. I've had my PB for about a year now but this is the first time it's happened. Actually, ever since the latest security update I've had a few different issues, eg applications not starting up and needing reinstal and powerbook not coming out of sleep.

I wonder if mine was just a one off.....

In any case, I've just ordered a 250gig Lacie D2 so I can do a back up of everything. Meaning to buy one to replace my old 80 gig for a while now anyway

I'm also on 10.3.3 btw.

Speaking of which..

Can you do a COMPLETE system backup of the
10.3.3?

I mean...a total harddisk IMAGE copy
and install clean without having to use
the osx install & upgrade disks again?
