I was wondering if one can delete apps in X the same way as OS 9, just trash the app folder or use the uninstall feature of the install CD (if X app CD's will have such a feature). What is the best way in X to delete apps and all the 'other' parts that the app installs.

Yes, just trash the folder. Actually, many OS X apps are even simpler than that because application packages contain all the little extra files inside the package itself. Explorer, for example, used to scatter all that crap in the Extension Folder, but now everything is nicely contained in the Internet Explorer.app.

There are, however, a few naughty exceptions like Seti@Home that put stuff the the System folder (I believe, at least, that's how the first OS X beta version worked). Those apps SHOULD have documentation for removing the excess, but most apps will never even spread stuff around like that.

You will also (depending on the program) find preferences in your ~/Library/Preferences folder. Explorer (mentioned before) puts your bookmarks and history and whatnot there. OmniWeb makes itself a folder right in ~/Library (which is a tad presumptuous if you ask me).

So use Sherlock to find all of the associated files that an application has before you consider the app fully "uninstalled."

Stream of consciousness: SETI@Home comes with an uninstaller script that can be run from the Terminal.
