AMD also make the embedded 486 in the AirPort Base Station.

However, just because someone once made something for Apple, doesn't mean they suddenly become the next processor choice!

If I made Apple's cardboard packing boxes, would I suddenly be considered a possible CPU supplier. No.

IBM make the G3's used in the iBook.

Motorola make the G4's used in the iMac, eMac, PowerMac, PowerBook, Xserve.

The iPod is based on an ARM core. The Newton and eMate used the Digital/Compaq/Intel StrongARM varient.

Lots of possible rumors available, maybe we should create a random rumor generator. Oh, MOSR already got one :-)

Mototorla also makes controllers in the Studio displays, pmus, and other controllers used in apple devices.

Personally, I vote for Sun Microsystems Ultra Sparc IV processor.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

The question isn't specific enough. The next processor will be by Moto in Jan, a faster G4 with new mobo enhancements. However, the next gen will be IBM's power4 core due next summer/fall. So depending on what the 'next processor' signifies the answer veries.

AMD's entire budget is going into the Hammer. They just don't have the resources to do anything beyond barely keeping up with Intel in x86. They're TINY compared to IBM, Motorola, or Intel. A PowerPC chip from them would be extremely unlikely (even if they're still in business in a few years to make succesors to this hypothetical chip). Apple using an x86 chip is (imo) out of the question. All the Altivec optimizations, and all the PowerPC assembly code in every Mac program would be made useless. All drivers would have to be rewritten. All apps would have to be recompiled. Classic and carbon would/could break. Also, AMD and Intel are trying to kill x86 (with x86-64, and IA-64), so switching to it just as it's dying would be foolish. I think it's going to still be Motorola and IBM, but hopefully it'll be competition between them, instead of Motorola being the sole supplier of high end chips.
