I think it probably is possible using the terminal, but I don't know if there are many people who would know how to do it.

As much as I love the backlit keyboard on the Powerbook, I really need a decent hack for it.

I have a 1440x900 1.67ghz Powerbook, which amongst other things, I use for DJing, but when there are lights flashing all over the place, I have to cover up the light sensor with a bit of paper, or tape to keep it permanently on, instead of flashing on and off as a passing light hits it.

Its often too dark to just switch it off, so hacking it with paper/tape is a must.

Am I missing something here, or is there an easy way to bypass the light sensor and just have the keyboard backlight fixed on when i need it?

Help!!!

1. Turn off keyboard illumination in the Keyboard system preference
2. Learn how to type

He wants it to stay on, not off.
"You rise," he said, "like Aurora."

Yeah, but since there's no solution to the flashing (short of using tape as he's already doing), turning it off is the next best thing when it comes to minimizing distraction.

As I see it, you have two options...

1. cover it up like you already are, or
2. turn the kb illumination off and get a USB LED light

What?

I've seen some hacks to do with making the keyboard illumination flash with certain keystrokes ( I think) when using iTunes, surely if you can do that, you can make it stay on constantly. I already use the USB ports when DJing, to add extra outputs and external mixing desk, so to add a USB light would also mean adding a USB Hub, which is more hassle than hacking the light. Plus, if Steve Jobs wanted me to have a USB light, he would have given me one with my PowerBook and not bothered building fiber optics into the keys...

What I would really love, would be the ability to press F10 to switch the lights on, and F8 to switch them off...but judging from the reaction here, no-one seems to think it is possible...
