Flat panel iMac 800. I cannot start up in OS 9.2.2. The OS 9.2.2 Install Disk also does not work...gets a quarter of the way into startup and stalls. Os 9.2.2 works fine in Classic Mode. I wouldn't worry about it, except that from time to time I need to start up in 9 in order to run Disk Warrior, Plus Optimizer, etc. I had this problem once before, and cannot remember how I fixed it, or where I found the answer. It is a firmware issue, as I recall, and I have zapped the PRAM to no avail. Also rebuilt desktop. Still no go. I'd appreciate any assistance. At the time I ran across several other people who had had the same problem...maybe one of you is still at large??

What an odd reply.

To jeromeke: the answer is to remove the bottom plate and press the reset button. Up and running.

Try starting up in single-user mode (cmd-s) and run
fsck -y
do this until it reports the file system has not been modified.

I don't know if this will work for you or not, but I had a problem where I had set the startup system to 9.2 and it wouldn't reboot at all into OS X or 9.2 (flashing folder).
I restarted from a FireWire drive and ran fsck, and it appeared to fix the problem - I could boot from 9 or X with no need to reinstall.

good luck!
