For those on the east coast, this is the place to post news, if you have power that is.

In NE, it's just ramping up, rain for a day but it's supposed to worsen this afternoon. We are prepared with water and flashlights and have charged the iDevices.

How is everyone else doing?

Here in Upstate New York, the storm is supposed to hit tonight. Our most serious threat will be from high winds according the weather reports I've heard. That's a bit of a relief, since we're only 13 months out from record flooding in my area. If the reports are wrong and we flood again, it's going to be very grim around here.

So far just some wind in northern NJ. I haven't heard of any local power outages or downed trees, and it hasn't started raining yet.

Just rain right now in NoVA. Wind seems to be picking up though. I'm inland so not worried about flooding. iOS devices charging, have water, batteries, and flashlights. Even though government is closed, I have to work since I am scheduled to telework today. That is until I lose power.

In Alexandria, VA. Wind is unbelievable, and it's not even close to what it's going to hit tomorrow.

Metro completely shut down for the second day in a row. Federal, state, and muni governments are shut down.

Dogs are wigging out and officially too scared to take a shit, so that's been fun. Their fear-farts smell GREAT.

ETA: also have the guns loaded. Can never be too safe during times of chaos.

The storm should pass right over western NY tomorrow, we are getting some wind and a lot of rain but nothing like the problems along the coast.

I just got an e-mail from a local car dealer:

As I'm sure you are well aware of the storm coming to NY, there is also another storm in progress... Its a storm of Savings!

Lots of gusts here during the day, high 50s to low 60s, not much rain though. Now it seems to have calmed down a bit, even though we are supposed to see the highest winds in the next couple hours. Power flickered a bit, some friends have trees down, but all in all not a big deal up here. My girlfriend's sister had a part of her chimney collapse and it took out the rear of her car....which totally blows.

Still well overdue for a real storm in this area, and when it does hit it's going to wreak havoc.

I just received a robocall from the city warning about high wind speeds because of the hurricane.

Yes, all the way in Chicago, where we're generally considered familiar with wind.

In Sterling, VA. lots of wind, and rain. Lost power for a moment 3-4 times since yesterday morning. I have 3 mole/vole repellent windmills which are great for telling wind direction and speed, so I moved one to the front lawn, far away from obstructions. it blew over even though it was 8 inches into the soil!

Nay, the plow attaches to the Bronco. We got ~4 inches, and then rain came and melted most of it. I've just been chillin' in the garage, doing mechanic stuff.

Disappointing storm. It wasn't as powerful as predicted, which doesn't surprise me too much. We never lost power.

There was, however, a thoroughly epic accident on the 14th St. bridge where I-395 goes into DC from Arlington - we watched on VDOT's traffic cams. There were dozes of emergency vehicles of all kinds all over the place.

Power came on 5:23 AM here in the West Village in nyc.
Had only a little pocket radio for news during the past few days, I am now looking at video of the devastation for the first time. It's unreal, from the south to up north, it's like the coastline got bulldozed over. very sad. Seaside Heights, Long Beach, Staten Island, Coney Island, The Rockaways, Breezy Point... unreal devastation...

So I am grateful to be able to check in. The warm basking glow of the internets once again fills my home.

thanks! glad to be here! I felt very disconnected, the radio was helpful, but still hard to visualize things. I felt that the reporting lacked articulation and was often frustrating, particularly when being told to watch a video or view a picture or instructed to go to a web site for information. yes, I felt isolated in many ways.
My area was like the Zombie Apocalypse at night, pitch black for miles. A little creepy. It would've been more fun if I had night vision (geez, imagine creeping up on someone...)

Food and fuel may be difficult the next few days for many. I heard that barges of gas are going to port at Newburgh, so maybe in a day or two that will be distributed. Also heard the National Guard is going to help deliver fuel, so maybe another couple of days of inconveniences. I heard NJ has odd/even gas distribution. But it's great to get back into the swing of things, however slowly it may go. The real victims of Sandy may never fully recover, it's tragic.

I just got power back today. I've never had power out for this long in any storm I've been through.

My aunt and uncle live a block from the NJ shore and have been living with friends. One sister in law got power back a day ago, the other one still doesn't have it back yet. Other than concern over the fuel shortages this hasn't been more than an inconvenience for me personally because I've been able to go to my in-laws to recharge and shower every day.

My sister and uncle both live in Manhattan and work in the medical field and have had a much tougher week. They both got swamped with patients from area hospitals that were closed.

Getting things back to normal for me will involve cleaning out the fridge and restocking it so I've got nothing to complain about compared to the people that have lost cars (like my brother in law) and homes (like some friends and former classmates).

Anyway, now with the gas rationing I'm afraid things will get worse before they get better. It is a bit unreal [for my generation anyway] to see lines of people waiting to fill gas cans and lines of cars that go on for blocks.

I have a dumb question: Why don't these people who are on line for gas in NJ just drive to Pennsylvania? (This assumes they had some gas to begin with, of course.) They can even pump it themselves there. I don't want to appear insensitive or anything, but as far as I know, the gas shortages are only really in the coastal areas near NYC that have had their gas distribution network disrupted. It's not that far a drive to find places that have a different distribution network, maybe an hour or two round-trip, depending on where you are. That trip is probably less of an inconvenience than having no gas, and if you can bring a few gas cans with you, then you can even share the wealth with neighbors when you get home.

More to the point why haven't the more enterprising souls of Pennsylvania driven up with a load of gas to sell to people who can't be bothered to go fetch it themselves?
