Yeah, but for the iPod G stood for hardware revision generation. With cell phone technology also going by the same generation naming scheme, it's too confusing to refer to both in the same way. Apple won't market an iPhone 4G unless and until it's based on 4G cell technology.

The 4G iPod didn't have ANY networking capabilities. The 3G iPhone was called such because it incorporated 3G networking technology, not because it was the third generation iPhone, which it wasn't.

My best guess is that 'Apple 4G' means iPhone 4th-generation. Moved to the iPhone forum in the interests of organization. Its mods can decide if it's a dupe or not.

I know. It was commentary on the OP's choice of title (Apple 4G) instead of iPhone 4G. But I agree that 4G would be a logical choice for their 4G (LTE) device not a 4th-gen phone.

Yes, I agree that HD at least sounds the best. Sounds like this device has a much higher pixel density than before as well, so it's possible.

I think the main marketing pitch for it will be the front camera for chatting (iChat perhaps) and the 720P camera on the back. Mixed with the display it has HD written all over it.

I never use video much but I'm looking forward to that back camera with flash!

According to Gizmodo, the guy who found it tried to contact Apple first, but nobody would take his calls. And, given that he found it March 22, I'd say he waited quite awhile for Apple to get back to him before taking it to Gizmodo.

As for ruining the guy's life, if you're carrying around prototype equipment and your employer is one of the most secretive corporations on the face of the earth, you deserve to be exposed as an idiot if you manage to leave said unit on a bar stool. Apple is actually well-known for planting (mis-)information including floating design ideas and case prototypes to gauge public (read geek) opinion. Actually "losing" a device is a bit of a stretch, but considering what we learned from this "leak" it's entirely in line with previous events. None of the specs were leaked, just the case design. If you recall what precautions Apple usually takes with their prototypes (like bolting things to tables sitting in vaults) this is astounding to say the least. And then Apple's confirmation of the "leak" by requesting the device be returned (even though it had been remotely killed hours ago) is just too much of a blunder if they were actually trying to limit the leak and prevent damage from happening. Bottom line: unless that engineer has been fired hours ago you can be certain this was orchestrated.

Not really. Had this leak been an actual leak Apple would have found out who lost it anyway. Do you seriously believe they have thousands of these prototypes they hand out to employees without knowing exactly which one went to which employee.

Did this guy honestly not know how to use the Locate feature? And the Display Message feature? put yourself in that situation, and you have two choices: 1) wipe your phone's memory, lose any chance of finding it, tell your boss that you lost it, and get fired; or 2) use the Locate feature and find out where it is within 10 feet, and beg for it back. I think the choice is pretty obvious.

If I were in this situation (drunk, of course), the choice would still have been obvious.

This, and the fact that this guy is still employed weeks after the fact and is having phone conversations with Gizmodo to try and rectify the situation, just does not make sense.

I never said they were fake (let alone scream). I doubted they were legit (the FCC logos still need to be explained). And the whole story seamed bogus to me (lost a prototype in a bar? riiight) until I realized this was all just a little show Apple was putting on.

Anyway, it's all in good fun. I just had to laugh when only minutes after I had read your firm statement I saw Apple go public and do exactly what you said they'd never do. No biggie.

That's the first thing I noticed when I saw the letter. It has to be fake.

Even Apple retail stores get current* Apple letterhead and the correct proprietary fonts (not freaking Arial). Everyone in the company is required to conduct correspondence using those templates. (Just like at any large company.)

There's just no way they'd do it on 10 year old letterhead with a PC font.

*Old materials are required to be immediately destroyed whenever new material is released.
