Trouble is, while they're pretty rare around here I expect they're ten-a-penny over there, so the difference factor (and thus noticeability) won't be so high - which is why I didn't recommend one.
I'm not recommending anybody get a freakin SUV. Like an older legacy, outback, 3 series wagon, accord wagon, anything. They're all versatile, and since MOST OF THE TIME you're actually going to be on teh road, you should get something that handles, brakes, and accelerates well.

Yeah realistically you want to get something cheaper, and keep the rest of the money towards a house/holiday. Or women and drugs, whichever... or get a cheaper car for a year or so, then go and get something a bit more bling when you have a bit of experience behind the wheel.
I don't know what insurance costs are like there but a 17 year old trying to get insured for a car like what you are looking for in the UK would get laughed out of the room by everyone except specialist insurers, and then you would easily be looking at a 4 figure annual insurance quote.

I wouldn't class those as having "instant do anything capability".
And what's this about "outdoorsyness (the real kind, not the fake lame ass SUV kind)"?
You're telling me a 3-Series Touring has more "real outdoorsyness" than a Jeep?

^^^ How to make friends on the intarweb
Cash has had the cars he has wanted, Charger, Neon and SVX, anyone who has been here for a while will know how much he enjoyed these cars.Read through the posts, we're trying to help you out here. You posted this thread to ask for help, and you reply to it with a line like that!
If you want an M3 or TT or whatever, go ahead. Don't come back crying here when you have lost control of it and thrown the car into a ditch and yourself into hospital.

You're 16 and you've earned/invested to get $25K on hand?
That's very impressive. Good for you.
If I owned my Corrado at 17, it wouldn't have lasted a year before I ran it into a ditch, I'm sure. New drivers and performance cars aren't a good mix.

What? Cash provoked him by attacking his grammar for no reason then topped it off by calling him spoiled. What was the point of that?
And as you said "read through the posts, we're trying to help you out" most of the posts have been saying "man, a $20,000 car for my first car I wish I had that." There's actually very little advice in this thread besides people wondering how a 16/17 is getting a nicer car than they have.

get a cheaper car for a year or so, then go and get something a bit more bling when you have a bit of experience behind the wheel.
You are 17 and beginning to learn driving (No, in fact you can´t drive when you´ve finished driving school, you gain save handling of the car out on the streets afterwards) and want to spend 25 k on a new car???
For god´s sake get a used one like this
and save the rest of the money for more important things like vacation, travelling to other countries, etc
Very, very sensible advice. Fast sports cars only really become interesting when you're driving them in places which don't have speed limits and cops.
I think this lot would be enough to tell me there was something up with a $25k car as my first car if I was 17.

Questions (V12);
Are you gay?
Are you a girl?
If you can answer "no" to both these questions, don't get a MINI.
Do they drain the testosterone out of you young guys these days? Some kind of mandatory processing centre they take you to once a week where they remove your testosterone before repackaging it as supplements for the muscle beach guys? I'm serious. What the bloody hell is wrong with you teenagers these days?

First off, there was a reason. The money is your parents. It is bordering on IMPOSSIBLE that a 17 year old could have saved and 'invested' well enough to have 25k to blow on their first car.
Secondly,IF, by some slim chance, you were that mature to save your money instead of blowing it on crap like 99.9999999% of all 16 year olds, and fantastically intelligent about investing, you'd obviously know that cars are about the WORST POSSIBLE INVESTMENT. They depreciate faster than nobody's business, they're extremely fragile, and they're hard to protect (door dings happen when you're not around, cost about $400-600 to fix, nicks on the bumpers, etc).
So if you put them together, the chances of some extremely intelligent ultra mature 13-16 year old saving up enough cash to invest it properly and make a big return, AND deciding to blow it all on a car, is ... just insane.
You are full of crap.

Have fun with that. A lowly $2000 neon will be faster, handle better, and brake better than the new mini cooper. The new mini's have also had more than their share of problems during the first year of ownership.

Mini Cooper Test Drive
The Mini Cooper is a well-executed piece by every measure. It's the total package that makes it an excellent value: appealing appearance inside and out, excellent performance, notable engineering, numerous safety devices and the simple delight of being in and around it. It gets excellent gas mileage and it will make your garage seem enormous.
The convertible makes no compromises for its ability to open its passengers fully to a beautiful day. And close them up again during a stoplight pause. Ain't buttons a gas?
About 10,000 Mini Coopers were sold in the United States from 1960-67. The 2002 Mini passed that mark within six months of going on sale it was on sale, and 36,010 were sold during calendar year 2003. It's easy to understand why. We'd be delighted to own one. And with the new convertible now in the line-up look out for the one-of-each family.
New Car Test Drive correspondent Denise McCluggage reported from Minneapolis with Mitch McCullough reporting from Los Angeles and New York and Sam Moses reporting from Ireland.
Another Review
Safety & Security
The new Mini Cooper comes with a barrage of technology that makes this car one of the safest in its class. The standard safety package include anti-lock braking, brake force distribution and four airbags. Additional safety options include dynamic stability control.
Quality & Reliability
The new Mini is more expensive than its rivals and it shows, the new cars finish and BMW's attention to detail is clearly evident in both the interior and external finish.
Owning
Mini Cooper residual values should hold up well, helped in no small part by the strength of its parent's brand. BMW has also promised that servicing costs will be competitive with the cars more mainstream competitors.
If I had the money, I'd buy one.

Also, if you are talking about depreciation, you are wrong. Hondas have the highest residual value. Honda is not a German car.

Found this: http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/...9/article.html
Mini Cooper is #2, so that is a point in your favor, but the rest of the German cars are high end luxury cars. As for the Japanese cars on that list, it seems that there are more Japanese cars on there that would be in your price range.

The point he is making is, no kid just getting his license would even APPRECIATE a M3.
You wouldn't know the difference.
You also can't handle a car going fast enough to make a difference.
And no, no you can't before you say you can.

I didn't think 17 year olds could play the stock market.
And yes, while Neons aren't a sports car, they can out-handle and are faster than Minis.

You should get some driving experience under your belt.
I had 3 beaters before I got a new car, but that's me. I'm an accomplished driver now, and knock on wood, have avoided several accidents because of this, and have remained accident free and violation free for 10 years. 24 years behind the wheel, and I have not caused 1 accident, but have whitnessed a few and have been on the scene to help.
Learn to drive safely.
10 o'clock / 2 o'clock. Both hands on the wheel...

Completely agree with Zimph.
Plus, V12, you said you wanted a fun car. M3's aren't really all that fun if you want to keep your speed low enough to keep your licence.

Yeah well ignorance suits you fine. I don't drive a neon, I drive a Subaru SVX. You undoubtedly don't even know what one is. As for german cars, knock yourself out. They've been pretty unreliable lately, and have pretty inflated parts and labor costs. As for a real job, what do you suggest? Maybe I could find some rich foster parents to give me money, invest it for 'me', and then I could come to an internet forum claiming I'm the one who invested it. That sounds like a bang up job! Let me know if you find any openings!

Need I mention AGAIN- young drivers wreck cars, if not their lives! DO NOT spend the money on your first car kiddo! If you so made this money-appreciate it, Buy low sell high right? I WISH I could drive as well as I THOUGHT I did when I was under 20- but it takes TIME!!!! Also- AGAIN Mazda 3.

V12, the people suggesting that you get a little experience under your belt before you drop the bucks on a nicer car might sound like old farts, but they have a valid point.
How about I share with you some pictures of what my brother did to his car 2 weeks after turning 16. His situation sounds a bit like your claim yours to be. My parents said if his grades were good, they would spend up to 15k on a car for him, and that if he wanted anything more than that, he'd have to come up with the difference. So from the time he was 13, he started saving all his money and doing odd jobs here and there.
When he was 16, he had saved up around $8000. My parents held up their end of the bargain, and he got a '00 Honda S2000. Take a look at what happened to it, when he ran off the road and jerked the wheel (something an inexperienced driver might do). He was going under 60mph, and it flipped 3 times. He had a concussion and was in the hospital for 4 days, he's lucky he's not dead:

Lets not jump to conclusions, money is not what the thread is about.
He said he lives in NYC. 25k is nothing. You could make more than that working fast food in a year in NYC. If you made so much as 13 you could just put it in the market and double it. I didn't live in NY when I was in high school but making 40k every couple of years was easy.

Yeah! Because YOU DIDN'T PAY BILLS- you spoiled rotten piece of crap! Did you even attend school at the time? Let's PRETEND you make $10 / hour at a fast food joint... That's only $21K IF you work 40/wk. BS!

yes i understand i need some expeirence drivinging however that is what drivers ed is for.
i was jsut wondering if anyone even bothered to read my initial post, the cars i am looking at are sedans, mostly safe and reliable, as much as i want a audi TT or nissan 350z i know its not worth it, there is a reason why insurence is higher on these cars....
anyway..like i said i took a look at the new jetta (4 door sedan, german, reliable, parts will be covered for next few years), and the used acura tl..(safe car from waht edmunds says, nice size, great buy for the money, and 7 year coverage policy from acura)
notice how i am sticking away from trucks due to gas mileage....
as for the saving and investingthe best i can do is give my world, im not like the average teen who blows his money on stupid stuff...i also got a scholarship to a private school which saves money for my parents
i started saving when i was aroudn 12 or 13, started investing when i was 15 with the aide of my father(yes i had a lot of say in this, i just got certain assistance from him), and i made about 3-4k in the past 18 months with ebay...
and thats right i dont pay bills, did you when you were a teen?

No. Driver's Ed gives you the BASIC tools not to be an idiot on the road and understand the rules.
Nothing can give you experience but experience. NOTHING.

I looked at, and even read your initial post. Those cars are decent.
-
The thing is, many in here have a great deal of experience in life and in driving, so they are giving you some sound advice when they say, get a used car, good shape, no rust, and if it has mechanical maladies (sp) then have a mechanic fix them. $7k will buy you alot and you can bank the rest or invest it some more. Your future is more than a car, but you are too young to see that it seems, even with your profound investing since you were 15...
How much can you save from 12 - 16 ?
Print this thread out, save it, whatever, and have a laugh when your 40.
Later. Just be safe.

No, drivers ed is for you to learn the rules of the road. It hardly gives you the experience you need. We are talking about a few years of driving daily.
Does it snow where you live? If so, I would have your father take you out into a empty parking lot when there is freshly covered snow on it.

A large parking lot, with no light poles to bump into.
Practice some panick stops, loss of control, you know, things they don't teach you in driver's Education.
I did this for myself, because I'm a safety person, and wanted to learn my limitations as well as my vehicle's.
Guess what? 24 years of driving and 3 total accidents. None of them my fault. On one occassion, I was just sitting at a stop light and two cars hit head on perpendicular to me. One went to the left, the other to the right and was going to hit me head on, and at the last second the axel broke sending it into my left front quarterpanel and driver's side door. Someone was looking out for me. I was in my vette at the time too. If that axel had not broken, that car would have landed on top of me.
You cannot avoid all accidents, but you can minimize the chances by thinking when you drive.
Oh, and never drive faster than your angel can fly...
