Does anyone know if Age of Empires II is playable cross-platform? I know that Age of Mythology is not, and wanted to see if that was the case for the whole series or just AoM.

I can't find a link handy, but I can definitely vouch for this from my time at Westlake. AoM uses DirectPlay, and the Mac port is not cross-platform compatible with the PC, just like with Age of Empires.

Without getting too technical or anything, but how much extra work does it take to make something cross platform ? Is it doable, and the companies just do not have the time/budget to do it, or is it impossible ?
I'm tired of playing AOE2 with the same few people all the time.
On the zone theres many thousands of people playing AOE2.
Just the fact that a game makes it to mac is good, but it's not that great if you can only play with a handful of other people.

In the case of DirectPlay, it's not impossible in the strictest sense of the word, but it's about the closest thing to it. Reverse-engineering the network protocol is very time-consuming, and would almost certainly add 12 months to the project and blow the porting budget through the roof. There are also the legal aspects - Microsoft has been pretty ancy about folks reverse-engineering it.
