Quicksilver

Quicksilver is hard to describe. I mainly use it as a launcher. You hit a hot key combo to bring up a search window then start typing the name of what you wish to launch. When you have found what you wanted to launch you hit Return and the app or file or whatever launches. It also learns from your selections so that if you type in "sa" and select Safari, Safari will be selected the next time you type in "sa" in the search window. Quicksilver does so much more, though. Like creating triggers that can launch apps or perform functions when you hit a key combo.

Cool, is it an application you can download? It sounds like the "spotlight" in Tiger, right?

They're in the files/folders section of the Dock, so I'd guess that they're files or folders, not apps

If you click the link I posted you will be taken the Quicksilver product page. On this page is a download link (among other things). It is really nothing like Spotlight. I mean, I guess it is similar in that you can search for and launch things with it, but that's where the similarity ends. Quicksilver is much more flexible and extensible, especially with the various plugins available.

IMO, more dock icons does not equal better! With apps like Launchbar (which I use) and Quicksilver, there isn't a need for dock icons at all, but I still keep apps I use on a daily basis down there:

Finder, Safari, Mail, iTunes, iChat, NetNewsWire, MarsEdit, Transmit, Word, Photoshop CS2
21" 2.5 Ghz Core i5 iMac | 13" 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbook
20" Cinema Display | iPhone 4 32 GB

Finder, iCal, Address Book, Mail, Safari, iWeb, iTunes, iPhoto, Trash

I like a clean Desktop.

I used to use Spotlight as a launcher and liked it. I've since reverted to LaunchBar, because it works. Spotlight hasn't worked on my G5 iMac for the past 5 or 6 months and I'm not reinstalling the OS just to fix that. Stupid random problems are why I switched, but I guess you never can completely escape them.

I have now made my Dock as minimal as possible, it has: Finder, iTunes, Camino, Trash.
I've realised I only use a handful of apps, and for most of these I have set up a hotkey to
launch it via Butler (for instance, to launch Skype I just type option-t). Any other apps
I just open with Spotlight.

Have you tried Quicksilver yet? It seems to be more suited for your needs than Spotlight and possibly Butler.

With some loud music + a friend to chat nearby you can get alot done. - but jezz, I'd avoid it if I had the choice---- If only real people came with Alpha Channels.......:)

Actually, Butler is better for my needs. I would only use Quicksilver if I wanted its (admittedly powerful) ability to manipulate files within
its interface (rather than just opening them). Butler can be tailored so it uses less memory than QS, and in my 6 month experience
(vs. 2 + years of Butler use), QS is more unstable. Configuring things like the multiple pasteboard is easier in Butler too, you can also
put a websearch in the menubar, and I much prefer it's interaction with iTunes (I use growl too, but think Butler provides a better notification system).

As you can tell, I like Butler quite a lot... and it does deserve more press.

(edit: can someone shrink those long images down? It's quite hard to read stuff in this thread now).

I also just started using Butler and its really been growing on me. I really like the way it puts icons of open apps in the menubar and if you click on one of them, you get that app. This is almost a solution to Taskmenubar.

Now that I'm using Butler, my dock just has the finder, the Apple clock in analog display, Netstatindock and loadstatindock. I just need two other good dock apps: A cpu display and a memory display (something along the lines of menemeters. I really like menumeters but my screen is only 15" and with Butler using more of my menubar, I had to get rid of something.).

i have hard disks hidden so that there is NOTHING on my desktop, hence the links to the hard drives in the dock
also, it's just so nice having to just drag things to the printer icon and it just prints.
