I bought my parents their first computer over the holidays - an eMac, but they're having a hard time getting started. I set up as much as as I could for them, but found that when I tried to explain things there were way too many aspects of computing I took for granted that really needed explaining. We're talking having to explain something as simple as a double-click.

Anyway, I live across the country from my folks, so I wanted to get them just a basic computing book so they can learn on their own. I remember reading a book titled something like "Understanding System 7.5" that helped me tremendously back in the day. I've heard okay things about the "Dummies" series, but does anybody have any good suggestions?

I already have a typing tutor program on the way for them.

I hope this questions is appropriate for this forum. Thanks in advance for your help.

David Pogue's Missing Manual for Panther is a good book for beginners. Covers just about everything basic in Panther and Apple's apps. Lots of screenshots as well.
Suicide Bombers: That never-say-die spirit. No, that's not right.

Try that...it goes through basics such as clicking, drag & drop, etc. and progresses into more advanced stuff.

Take a look at Aaron Rosenzweig's Old Fart's Guide to the Macintosh. Here is a review of it. I heard an interview with the author. Sounds like it would be a good book for a beginner. If you can get past the title.

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to head over to the local bookstores for closer inspection then send one to my folks.

check out www.macosxhints.com. The guy who runs the site, robg, used to and still may have a good basics guide in PDF.

edit: robg's book is available on Amazon, edited by D. Pogue, here.
