Is there anyway to rip the contents of a game CD/DVD to my hard drive so I don't have to insert the CD when I want to play the game?

I ask because I like playing games on flights, but a CD spinning really drains the battery power on my PowerBook.

Make an image of the disk with disk utility. This will create a mountable dmg. I've done this with wc3 and wc3 frozen throne with no problems whatsoever.

Game play also speeds up a tad.

Some games don't like just a dmg, but sometimes it works to lock the disk image you made, that often fools the game.

The game just chekcs a certain number of files on CD when you launch it. So you can make image of those files.

In the case of WC3, I made an image of "Support" folder, which is no more than 10K.

Actually, there are a lot of such "No CD Patches" online. You can find them out.
