That photo essay only goes back to the '50s. C'mon . . . it should really start at least 40,000 years ago with the Conch shell, the original portable audio device.

Man, I remember those little transistor radios! Lousy sound quality, but high coolness factor (at the time).
As for the first portable music device, I bet "banging 2 sticks together" has got to be at least a million years older than conch shells.
