My capless choice is $300/month.

Sadly, I may have to cough it up.

I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to watch MacBreak Weekly. It's just so damn boring. Big Mac news is also so mainstream (and rare) now.

I agree with you there. I've been on and off that show for a few years now.

It feels like a half hour of (boring) Mac Talk, a half hour of lame banter and a half hour of sponsors and (boring) picks of the week. There is no drama or insight. I like Andy Inhatko, but man can that guy blather on and on if left unchecked.

My favorite Podcast right now is This is my Next (now The Verge). Those guys are much more relatable then the bland folks on the TwiT network, and they argue a lot more. I like to hear some feisty discussion. I like the passion. All of the TwiT shows are so bland.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

No such thing.

Anyway, I checked whenI got home, and I haven't finished a MacBreak in 4 weeks. So I guess that's that then. Part of it is work, but part of it is it's a struggle.

It's been weeks of Steve is dead, which is getting hard to take.

As for Alex, he used to irritate me until I saw him do interviews at an Apple Store event. It was a total transformation. He showed me he was a pro rather than just talking about it.

After that, I liked him 100 times more.

Alex is fine in small doses. Its when he subs for Leo that I can't stand him. He's not a good host, but he's a decent guest.

I've been slowly losing interest in Macbreak Weekly as well. Although I do still watch every week during my downtimes at work. But something seems to be missing from the earlier days. Maybe they need to bring Scott Bourne back? (kidding!)

Yeah, I didn't care for Scott Bourne, but I do remember him and Merlin mixing it up on pretty much everything. I started on MacBreak because Merlin always had great asides and he always seemed to lay stuff out in pretty strong, colorful terms.

Everything you all are saying makes sense from a podcast perspective, but as a live watcher, I'm okay with banter and no fighting.

But it wasn't fighting – they had very different perspectives about usability, interface, purpose, and they made their stances very clear to each other. Bourne got a lot of shit because he came off as anti-Apple at times (rightfully so), but even if he was the Colmes to Leo's Hannity, it was worth it for some of the episodes.

now the stock stuff, that got old quick.

It went so far that Bourne had his lawyer prepare a statement for him to read on the podcast as a disclaimer.

Oh yes, I forgot about Merlin. He was definitely interesting to listen to. I liked his obsession with GTD. I took a lot of tips from him that I still use today.

I used to listen every week now I just dip in and out. If a weeks 'cast gets slow I just stop listening. Mostly the next weeks is better.

I do miss Scott Bourne though. Him and Merlin really made it. Andy Ihnatko is always worth listening to as well.

I could never work out if Merlin was just quite insecure or played it up. He seemed to take offence easily, which is maybe why he drifted off.

I get to podcast with Andy and another twit regular Don McAllister, which is nice, would be cool to get an invite onto MBW but I'm not sure I have enough cogent stuff to say, or a great way to say it.

One of the benefits of watching live was after Leo had left, Nick and Baratunde started an impromptu "Occupy TWiT" protest.

Really? I thought it was kind of off. Dvorak was especially weak. I did enjoy Norton's rants, though I can't for the life of me remember what they were about.

I really enjoyed the TF2 LAN party they had later though.

Didn't get to finish the episode yet, but Dvorak was in full useless form. Too many informed people calling him on his BS and you could tell he got cranky when he couldn't just bully the conversation like he usually does (Seriously, shooting at Brushwood?).

Merritt is even more informed than I recall, to the point where it seemed to almost diminish the forum a little. It was a little funny how Leo would throw out random questions and Tom would keep giving having these well informed replies. Speaks a little poorly to Leo, honestly.

In what way?

As for Dvorak, he was simply outgunned by the entire panel. I kind of felt a little bad for him.

But isn't the point of the show to hear what the guests have to say?

I wish i could remember what the questions were, but they were semi-basic, rather than conversational. The best fake example I can think of is something like:
Brushwood: BLAH BLAH Android would be better if they could get x going.
Leo: So yeah, why haven't they been doing x?
Tom: Actually, it's a complicated problem stemming from disagreement over who owns the patents of z dating back to 200x. They've been trying to rectify this for the past two years. *casually sips wine*

His interjection seemed more based on ignorance than curiosity. Like if someone were talking about Apple's marketshare and how it would be bigger if it weren't for their pricing and some dude just drops in "YEAH WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?!"

Maybe Tom's matter-of-fact style just made it seem like what he was talking about was kind of common knowledge.

Though it certainly could be that Leo is not as well versed in some technical topics as other people on the show, it is a *very* important job for him to be the voice of the less-informed listener.

As the host of a panel, he must balance info that's digestible for new listeners and industry experts alike.
For the type of show he has, he needs to ensure new listeners don't get lost, and experienced tech readers have some meat to chew.

I have experience as a panel host, and often I will need to take the posture of, "okay, so, um, what does that mean?" even when I know. That's for the benefit of new people, or people using weird acronyms, archaic terminology, or talking bleeding-edge technology.

I'm always impressed with Leo's laid back attitude, and I seek to emulate him during my monthly panel hosting. However, I haven't listened in about a year, so things may have changed... and it's telling that I haven't listened in a year...

Now that I'm thinking about it, I have to say there's a big novelty quotient. I've never been to a LAN party, never seen one broadcast, never played TF2 or seen more than screenshots, etc.

That's not to say it doesn't rise above novelty, I'm just having trouble being objective. Unfortunately, it's not going to become weekly until January, so I'll have to reserve a more detailed analysis for then.

Ha, so I finished the episode and near the end Tom is cracking the egg of knowledge over everybody's heads when Leo interjects that's why he has Tom. "I don't know anything and Tom knows everything." Which goes off into a tangent that Leo is not long for the show and the only reason he's still working is because of his voice and boyish good looks.

So there you go, case closed.

Maybe if I see it again, I'll get what you're talking about, but Tom's job is to cover daily tech news. Of course he's going to be well informed. With the exception of other people who anchor a daily tech news show, shouldn't he be more informed than anyone?

Is there even another full-on daily tech show in existence? BOL is weekly now.
