I know there's some other TWiTs in here. How does the new studio grab you?

I'm a little overwhelmed by it. I guess you can put me in the category of people who are worried it will all become "too professional". One of the things I like about TWiT is how homey it is, with all kinds of rough edges. Also, I'm in the TWiT as radio camp, so I only watch live, which means I get all the screw-ups.

The stream looks frigging fantastic though. Even though the full resolution by pixel count is less (at least, the window in VLC got smaller) the resolution that's there is tack sharp.

That's when it starts, but he comes back with Leo's salad and stuffs his face with it during the show.

He wanted the pizza but complained it was cold, and when offered the option of nuking it, he complained that makes it all rubbery.

http://inside.twit.tv/blog/2011/6/21...udio-tour.html

Their new studio looks like someone took a Chipotle and added a bunch of tacky steam punk crud to it. It looks pretty dated and it's brand new.

It feels like they tried way to hard.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I hear what you're saying. It was built by The Screen Savers guy, and they used The Screen Savers set as a design reference. When did that show die? 2003?

Is TWiT worth listening to again?
I used to subscribe to the podcast umpeen lifetimes ago, but got really tired of listening to Leo's ego massage itself and his constant pimping of products. And, yeah, Dvorak could be a huge PITA. It's amazing how much oxygen a guy can expend in order to be so wrong about so much.

I stopped listening to TWiT for a while when I didn't have a long commute, but I never gave up on Security Now. I primarily listen in the car so the set doesn't really matter to me.

Leo wanted it to show he was large and in charge. He specifically referred to it as "the Dr. Evil chair".

OTOH, there are a whole bunch more shows now which don't include Leo, but I personally think some of them have way bigger egos than him (I'm lookin' right at you Merritt). It still may not be your bag.

I can highly recommend Security Now. Leo knows his ego isn't appropriate for that show.

Looks like I'm on the outside again, but I love John Dvorak, and still find Leo to be a great host. He sometimes fake-laughs too often, but old radio habits die hard, I suppose.

I love the new studio. I usually listen to the podcasts rather than video podcasts though, so it's probably not going to affect my perception of the show.

My problem with the TwiT shows is that they cover about 20 minutes worth of tech news in an hour and a half. I understand that some banter and personality needs to come through, but they tip the scales too far. Plus Leo hogs the spotlight. There are typically 5 cast members but 2/3 of the show is Leo talking.

I really prefer the Talk Show and Hypercritical on 5by5.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I find both Leo and Dvorak highly entertaining. The podcasts that include Dvorak are usually the highest downloaded.

I'd say O'Reilly. Dvorak is more grumpy than paranoid. Adam Curry makes a better Glenn Beck.

Little known fact: I used to date Adam Curry's cousin. Women in their early 30s find this curiously irresistible.

Yeah, I think of Glenn Beck because he throws out conspiracy theories (probably because he hangs out with Curry too often), and just has general diarrhea of the mouth that he rarely gets called out on (though certainly gets called on it way more than Beck). He's also a massive contrarian, though I'm not sure I could pin that to either O' Reilly or Beck.

The big takeaway here, however, is that he's Fox News quality, and that is never a compliment (exception to: ratings).

I can't say I've really learned much on TWiT over the years. I usually hear what they have to say on other websites, but their spin (Leo and D) is often the reason I listen in.

I find Leo informative and entertaining. I do not find Dvorak the slightest bit entertaining. Just like Glenn Beck.

I use a decent amount of it to either stay current or broaden knowledge on a few topics, though I admit I also enjoy the raw banter.

Dvorak is hilarious, but I find curmudgeons endlessly funny. The thing I like about Dvorak is that he's not afraid to call people out on crap. He's not always right (the mouse thing being history's most notable example), but at least he's not shmoozing everyone like the rest of the panels.

It really does vary. Leo shuts up for the oft mentioned Security Now. OTOH, This Week in Google is almost all banter.

As I said earlier, I listen live, which is a different dynamic than listening to a podcast. The whole idea behind listening live is it's okay to tune out stuff you're not interested in, whereas with a podcast, I feel I need to be paying attention the whole time. That's pretty much why I stopped listening to podcasts. I felt I needed to dedicate myself to listening. With TWiT, I just throw it on, and it's a background companion throughout the day (very much like terrestrial radio before it went in the crapper).

There are dozens of really good podcasts. You mentioned The Talk Show. This Is My Next is also excellent.

Certainly on the This Week in Scratchy episode, where he kept fingering his mic for two hours.

Interesting.

He talks slow, but isn't particularly low energy, so I can tolerate it.

On the new gaming show, they had an episode with just Glenn and Brian, neither of which have reall skill at keeping a show going, and a guest (I want to say Joshua Caleb) who was so agonizingly low energy, I was unlistenable.

I like Rubenstein and Brushwood far more than Merritt and Ahktar, but there's no denying the last two have genuine broadcasting chops.

Are you kidding me? The guy is a few steps away from stasis. Does he even have light in his apartment?

The hair doesn't bother me. His opinions don't bother me at all -- usually in agreement with most of them.

It's his voice, and the way he completely dominates the conversation, even interrupting when someone is making a well-thought-out point. Forget Leo -- when Brian is on the show, no one else is talking. He's like the radio DJs who laugh too loud for far too long.

Agreed.

I expected not to like him. The hair's a red flag. The big double-B logo behind him is a turn off. All these thing screamed ********* to me, but then in actuality he's so nice and sweet, I was really surprised.

On the flip side, I started out liking Merritt because he seemed nice, but he keeps coming off more and more like a *********. As I said though, very talented, so he's got rope before it gets to deal-breaker level.

I like Sarah, and I've been totally in love with Becky since TechTV.
