Everytime I attempt to use the Software Update feature, it finds several items that need to be updated but as soon as update is selected an error message appears and I cannot download the update. I am using an iMac with OS 9.1

I too use a cable modem ... I had no problem with a cable modem before, but this is a different modem and a different location. Is that the issue? Is this something the cable operator can fix?

Nope. It may be because you have cable, but its still the fault of Software Update.
Are you running through a proxy? I wonder if perhaps the Updateable Files list has been messed up or something... hey... locking that thing'd be a pretty good prank
