If money is your only judge of success, Microsoft would win hands down.

successful at selling a crappy product--Microsoft
successful at making an awesome product with comparatively crappy sales--Apple.

I'd rather have the awesome product with fewer sales. (well.. I guess thats obvious)

I don't think of Microsoft as successful. I don't think of Hurricanes as being successful either...

Microsoft - not because of Windows, because of Office

The whole reason computers were invented was to make life easier, but microsoft made it harder. Apple didn't just make it easier but their products look good too. I still dunno why M$ is more successful with sales. Is it because almost all computers use it or is it because it's dominating the market?

If the goal is to make bucket-loads of money, the MS wins.

If the goal is to improve productivity, MS loses. If MS did not produce Windows, and market it so effectively, then everyone would be using something else (possibly Mac, possibly not), and anything other than Windows is a better productivity tool. This is entirely subjective, of course.

Its because you can run Windows on any box--you dont have to buy some special MS hardware. Its also cheaper. That got them their inital popularity. People's unwillingness to change, the fact that intel processors had generally higher numbers than PowerPC's, and the fact that more games play on PC have all be factors in making it easy for MS to keep (and grow) that popularity.

...but it still sucks.

Anyone that says Apple is more successful when it comes to economic success - ie sales etc, is foolish. Why else would Gates be the richest man in the world, and Jobs is far from that....

In terms of who is more successful in marketing and making cool products, then its obviously Apple.

the reason why Job is far behind Gates' wealth is because Steve Jobs dont own Apple.....and i think one of the reason why Microsoft sells more its because Microsoft's computers is much cheaper!! they are more on quantity than quality...

Microsoft. Success in the business world means one thing: how much money you have made. It isn't up for fanboi interpretation.
