Boston University is suing Apple over infringement of a patent for thin, insulating monocrystalline gallium nitride films. The Boston Herald reports that the case was filed Tuesday through the US District Court of Massachusetts, and that the patent in question dates back to 1997, credited to computer engineering professor Theodor Moustakas. The university lists the iPad, iPhone 5, and MacBook Air as infringing products.

The patent has already been used in eight claims in total, including ones against Amazon and Samsung. While the Apple component allegedly violating the Moustakas patent is a minor one, Endpoint Technologies analyst Roger Kay estimates that a victory for the university could be worth as much as $75 million.

Probably easier to get money out of patent settlements than alumni donations.

If someone waits this long to file a patent dispute, it could not have been that important.
We need to stop this nonsense.

Well then screw BU! I won't be applying to your campus anytime soon. Apple didn't infringe s***, they took your product and made it awesome. You really think Apple wouldn't acknowledge that? You don't deserve a cent from this!

So let's see. Amazon and Samsung were already sued and we never heard a word about it anywhere. Apple gets sued over the same patent and it will be plastered all over the Internet and used to hammer down the stock price even more. Is that how it works?

@lkrupp: Yes. Sadly, that is exactly how it works.

@lkrupp: errr, I just did a quick check of several news sites and, strangely, Apple being sued over another patent is not front-page news. Where is it news? MacNN. Is the reason we've not heard about it before perhaps rather more to do with the lack of an AmazonNN or a SamsungNN than anything to do with the stock price?
