This is no doubt a simple question for those that know but I have a 3TB drive I am trying to clean and reformat. In the course of 'fiddling' I now have no name for the disc itself and the only ting that shows up on DiskUtil are the names of the partitions. There is no way I can find to reformat or repartition under the circumstances.

Suggestions on how to get out of this dilemma?

Also is it possible to format a portion of an HD in MS (NTFS) and a portion in Journaled Mac?

Thanks so much

Do you mean that there is no name for the whole drive showing in Disk Utility? Does Disk Utility show just a drive icon with no name... Is it keeping you from selecting that icon?

There is no indication that the drive is even present, just the partitions within it. When you click on any of those you only get the options for a partition, not a drive. In other words there is no Erase tab come up, only a Partition one. And the partitions cannot be changed in that mode.

All partitions passed a Verify test even though I though I had earlier erased them.

I have also tried to use Disk Warrior and Drive Genius but neither of those recognize the drive by name either.

Is this an external? The enclosure might be going ...

In the Partition tab, change the number of partitions via the popup. Or click the [+] button to increase the number. That usually unlocks the partition controls, allowing you to repartition as desired.

The partition scheme may be corrupted. So click the (Options...) button, and switch to GUID partition. If it's already on GUID, switch to something else and partition - then do it again, repartitioning to GUID. The object is to force Disk Utility to rewrite the partition info.

Once you have it partitioned, you can Erase each partition to whatever format you like. Including Journaled HFS+ for Mac, and NTFS for Windows.

Did this really solve your problem?

For me it sounds like the same problem I had a few weeks ago!
Are you on Yosemite?
