Hi everyone,
I will be visiting Germany soon, so I felt like asking you guys for recommendations.
Cities worth visiting, must-see places, etc. anything you would do yourselves I guess.
Cheers

have fun! i had to cancel my trip this year; the american dollar sucks so bad that the trip i was planning on when from $2300 to just over $3000 (air fair, bed and breakfast type accomodations for a week, 2 days at oktoberfest, castle trips, etc). that is a big jump in price for 1 year difference.

I'd track down Franziskaner in Munich and sample some fresh Weissbier. Mmmm.
And have a great time!

Bring back some Jägermeister, as much as you can. A friend at works sister brought him a bottle back. He said is was muck stronger that the stuff sold here. He described it as "narcotic" compare to the US stuff.

There are some members of this board that are from Germany, perhaps they would be able to assist.
Other than that, drive really fast on the Autobahn and drink lots of beer (preferably not together).

I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Will be arriving to Berlin, so any suggestions on other cities, or stuff to do in Berlin would be most welcome.

Germany, as well as the whole of Europe, is gorgeous. I mean everywhere. I've been to Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Denmark... Simply beautiful. Just pick some cities, you won't be dissapointed.
Just remember ONE simple rule which applies to everywhere in Europe:
Do NOT act like the typical Ugly American. Be polite and just try to say some words in the local language. Por favor, merci, graci, gracias, anything. You'll fit in more so than if you refused to at least say anything in the local language. They love that over there.
Oh, rule number 2: Europeans LOVE zippos.

You *must* visit Salzburg and Fussen (famous for Neuschwanstein).
Both are absolutely beautiful.

hg Berlin, my home city.
You could easily spend your whole time there.
Good things to visit include:
- Reichstag
- Oranienburger Strasse
- Ku'damm
- Prenzl'berg (e.g. Kollwitzplatz)
- Potsdamer Platz
- Pergamon Museum
Have fun.

Salzburg is in Austria.
Really, an important question is what you're looking for - are you interested in the "do Germany" tourist stuff (see as much as possible, make sure you get all the landmarks and all the tourist places the folks back home might possibly have heard of and will ask you about), or would you rather try to get a feeling for the places you'll be visiting and get some sightseeing squeezed in there?
If the former: I have no real advice, except that Heidelberg is absolutely beautiful, but it's not much else.
If the latter: There's plenty enough in Berlin alone to last you *weeks* (to years). Munich is great (to visit, not to live), and it's about six or seven hours by train from Berlin, and Hamburg is pretty cool for visiting (and living ).
A couple of tips:
- Almost all Germans are more or less fluent in English (but many are reluctant, because they tend to be uptight about getting it right, rather than just communicating). But it's always appreciated if you gently ask beforehand whether English is okay - it's kind of rude to just walk into a store and immediately start asking questions in a foreign language. (Plus, some really just don't speak it well.)
- If you're a Republican, avoid talking about politics. I'm serious.
- Enjoy the nightlife.

In Munich there is lots to do. If you're into museums, you can spend days there. I also recommend visiting the museum of Concentration Camp Dachau. If you give us a little more detail on the things you're interested in and a time span, I can give you more specific advice. Munich is also a mecca of classical music: concert tickets aren't cheap, but Bayerisches Staatsorchester (Bavarian State Orchestra) is among the best in the world. The old Olympiazentrum is very nice, you have the best view on Munich from Olympiaberg (Olympia mountain, actually a pile of rubble, a leftover from the war). The best beer in Munich is Augustiner, hands down.
Salzburg (which is indeed in Austria) is about two hours by train from Munich, it's a great one-day trip if you're staying in Munich. Füssen and Neuschwanstein is also two hours away and not as easy to get to as Salzburg. I highly recommend Salzburg as a one-day trip (Feste Salzburg, the big castle, etc.).
The young generation isn't so sensitive regarding WW2 (as long as you don't start lecturing them). Iraq is a more touchy subject, because general opinion is that -- seeing as how Iraq has turned out -- the concerns and criticisms were right on the money. (I don't mean to start a debate about this, just saying.) If you're not on the same page, it's best to avoid the topic.
Oh, and one more piece of advice: when my sister's host brothers were visiting her a few years back, they insisted on renting a car in Munich -- which is pointless, unless you want to do trips outside of the city center. Cars are a nuisance in city centers of larger or even medium-sized cities. If you rent a car to drive on the Autobahn, be careful. People drive much faster here, but they're used to it.
I agree with analogika about English skills: you'll almost surely find someone who can speak some English. German politeness dictates to use the language that's easier to use for the guest (not saying all Germans are polite, though ).

So do we, much to the disdain of our fellow citizens in the South
(There is quite a bit of mutual loathing between Bavarians and Austrians, just for fun, of course.)

Go to Quedlinburg (in the former DDR/GDR, close to the Hartz mountains) - it's a world heritage site, lovely half-timbered houses, castles and churches... Most from the 16th century...
If you wan't I can recommend a nice hotel run by some of my wife's family
