The picture on my 2001 iBook is beginning to wash out, and I'd like to adjust the contrast a bit. The only tool that appears to be available for the job is the Colour Calibration wizard in System Prefs, and it doesn't really let one just adjust contrast.
Are there any other options to adjust contrast?

I've recently used a program called 'SuperCal' to set up the screen on my MacBook:
SuperCal by bergdesign
Hope it works for your iBook!

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but there's a built in contrast in preferences. GOTO system preferences/universal access, you can change contrast from there and even zoom the entire screen in & out.

I second supercal but you can also try the calibrator in OS X. System Pref--->Displays

With some loud music + a friend to chat nearby you can get alot done. - but jezz, I'd avoid it if I had the choice---- If only real people came with Alpha Channels.......:)

OK, this is an old thread, but I'm wondering the same thing. I have a new MacBook Pro though. Before you say, "use the contrast key on the keyboard", I tried that and I get a lock icon over the adjust image:
The brightness adjustment works as expected. I've looked at the preferences, but can't see where this might be set.

Umm...that's not a contrast icon. That's for adjusting the brightness of the backlit keyboard. I'm not sure I understand the question. Other than calibrating for color, as mentioned in the earlier posts, there's no real "contrast" in LCD displays, only backlight brightness. The contrast in Universal Access seems to simply add more white to the image, making it artificially brighter.
As for the OP, his problem is probably that the old fluorescent backlighting in his display is getting dimmer and dimmer. There's not much that can be done about that without replacing the display.

Wiskedjak: just go into the display system prefs, and set them to either sRGB or wide gamut RGB.
