Help installing OS X

I am trying to install OSX on a system that has 9.2xxx
When I insert the disk and it directs me to restart the machine.
A blank screen with the apple logo come up but then nothing happens.
WHat am I doing wrong.
I am new to Mac's so I need some help.

It would help if you told us what model mac you have and it's configuration...ie HD, Ram, pci cards ect, what version of OS X you are trying to install, and whether it is a RETAIL or OEM disk..... the more details the better 
All macs from the B&W G3 forward will accept OS X as is, maybe the oldest ones would need a firmware update & lots of ram, but not much else......
Earlier machines will need some help in the form of a utility called XpostFacto.....available on versiontracker.com or otherworldcomputing.com

I've had this problem a few times. This is what worked for me:
Try zapping your PRAM to clear any possible corrupted data left over. Hold down Command (Apple) + Option + P + R the second you turn on the computer.
Hold it down and let it reboot at least 3 times. Now hold down your Option key so it'll boot back into classic. Open your Startup Disk control panel and make sure your startup disk is still selected.
Restart once for good measure.
Insert OS X CD, and try the install one more time.

833 megs of RAM? That's a very strange number; are you sure that this is actually the amount of RAM in the machine and not something else?

You might have a defective copy of Mac OSX Panther. Because I preordered mines from Apple got it the day Panther officially came out. I innserted it in the optical drive and booted off the install disk by pressing the "C" key on restart. The computer was stuck forever on The White Screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning thingy. I called Apple Support and we did some tests with making disk images and there were errors, thus proving that the Installl Disk 1 was defective and I was allowed to take it to an Apple Retail Store for an exchange for a new copy.

Hold down the command (next to the space bar) key and the v key when you're booting, and see if that gives any interesting error messages. Post them here if you can.
