Shift+control+command+3 copies screen to clipboard
Shift+command+3 puts a .pdf image on the desktop
Shift+control+command+4 lets you manually select the area of the screen you want
Shift+control+command+4 then space bar will take a shot of the app you click on

Mac, not MAC.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Well he might be trying to use his Media Access Control to take the screenshot. I doubt that would be possible.

Or Canadian cosmetics.

Anyhow, note that command-option-shift-4 and spacebar takes a picture of the window, not the application that you click on. Most Mac apps have, or can have, multiple windows, and this captures only the window you click on.

Note also, everyone, just for future reference, the normal order for listing combinations of modifiers is:

command-option-control-shift-letter.

Always start with command, to make it clear it's a command combination, as opposed to a typing combination.

Another alternative is to use the Grab application in the /Applications/Utilities folder. It allows one extra form of screen grab that the keyboard shortcuts don't - you can take a timed screen grab (it'll take the screenshot 10 seconds after you tell it to). It also allows you to select a style for the mouse pointer to appear in the screenshot (note - the keyboard shortcuts don't include the mouse pointer in their shots).

FWIW, if you open the System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts preference tab, you will see a list of many of the system wide keyboard shortcuts.

Give a man a fish; you have fed him for one day. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.

All keyboard commands for screenshots as well as the usage of the Grab application are explained in the Mac OS help.

On that note is it at all possible to take a snapshot of a DVD playing without downloading Snaps Pro or whatnot?

People really should start to wrap thier little lazy minds around the built-in help features of OSX. It is a lot more user-friendly than MAN pages, so the comparison with Linux isn't really fair. Searching the help for screen capture, screen grab or screen picture would have answered this much faster.

Sorry if this sounds condescending (I don't know your experience level), but are you sure it's actually not opening? The menubar doesn't say "Grab" after you open it? Because Grab doesn't have any window. The only way to tell it's open is by looking in the Dock or the menubar.

On Macs with Quartz Extreme, DVD screenshots used to work. In Panther, it deactivates Grab and the keyboard shortcuts when DVD Player is open.

By the way. The next version of VLC will have a "snapshot" feature that will put png (of jpg) images on your desktop (much like the OSX screenshot function).

These snapshots will only contain the videoframe (no titlebar or anything aqua related).

Nightly development builds of VLC are available here: http://www.videolan.org/~videolan
BEWARE: this is an unstable build which changes day to day and can therefore be extremly crash and error prone.

Great. However the snapshot appears to be squeezed horizontally.

This probably depends on the type of video you tried to snap. AR etc.
If you visit forums.videolan.org you can report such issues.

btw. i have since confirmed that there is indeed a problem with snapshots and display aspect ratios. This indeed shows mostly on 16:9 DVDs. xvid avi's etc work without a hitch.

DVD uses non-square pixels. Chances are, the screenshot code isn't compensating for this.
