Why are my music folder and iTunes Lib. not the same size?

So i just got my new mbp....transferred all my music from my old PC to it, and noticed its taking up approximately 20 gb...
but when i load all my music into iTunes, it shows up at around 7 gb... and on my ipod it shows 7 gb.
I have no idea why this is... can anyone shed any light...
***this also includes music/movies/album art that is in iTunes... not JUSt music... but they should still be the same size...

How did you transfer the music? And were there any songs in, for example, Windows Media format?

welli transferred the songs from an external hdd (which wont mount now btw)
and the songs may have been in windows media when they were originally downloaded/ripped...
BUT when they were originally on my PC, they were all played before in iTunes...so iTunes had already converted them (or did whatever it does) before my mbp even was a though...
like i said, i dont know how this works at all... but i only have half of my hdd space now...and all from 7 gigs of music and a handful of apps...

iTunes for Mac doesn't play WMA files. AFAIK iTunes for Windows doesn't automatically convert WMA files to something else, it can play them natively. So if you have a bunch of WMA files, iTunes on your Mac probably doesn't recognize them as music files and didn't add them to the Library.

You might have had duplicate listings or songs listed on your Windows iTunes library that were no longer there.
Compare the size of your Windows music folder to the size of your Mac music folder (independent of iTunes).

It's also possible that, depending on how the music folder you imported was organized, iTunes reorganized it, and in the process, made duplicates in doing so (iTunes - Preferences - Advanced: Keep iTunes Music folder organized, Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library).

Give this a go:
Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes ♫ Managing Files
It'll take a while to run, depending on how large your iTunes library is. But once it's done it'll give you a list of all the files you have in your Music folder which are ont in your iTunes library.

FWIW, no, it can't. It converts them to AAC format.
