I just chmod -R 777 /Library Crap! Was this a bad mistake? What exactly have I done, and how can I put it back to the way it was before?

P.S. Never let someone dystract you when you are fooling around in the terminal...

Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.

Presumably you did this by prepending that command with sudo. sudo may give you a little hesitation before hitting the enter key.

You should never "fool around" with sudo or root (if you enabled root).

Reminds me of something I read somewhere:
"Unix does not stop you from doing stupid things because that would also stop you from doing clever things."

Fooling around in root will make your computer as unsafe as a Windows computer.

Well, actually, it does provide some safeguards (like the fact you have to explicitly sudo your command and enter your password). If you deliberately ignore those safeguards, that's your problem.
