Weak! Talk about a shitty day for John Edwards. Concede victory in Presidential race at 2 PM EST, find out wife has breast cancer at 5 PM. Poor John, I hope everything goes okay for his wife and family.

I'm not going to call an ambulance this time because then you won't learn anything.

Good luck to the Edwards family and I hope she makes a speedy recovery. Must be a pretty rough time for them to say the least.

First they lose their son as a teenaged boy.

Then he loses the vice presidency.

Now his wife has breast cancer.

It's very sad. They have two small children also. I admired her because she has accomplished a great deal. When they lost their son they decided to have more children and they were blessed with two more little ones. She was 50 years old at the time and she had my respect for that alone.

What is very sad is that 1 in 8 American women develops breast cancer. It is an epidemic. It's really sad. The race for the cure is not fast enough, unfortunately. A friend of ours, 30, has breast cancer. Another friend found out two weeks ago that she has breast cancer and she is 37. Women are younger and younger with this disease.

No, not at all. I've just heard too many first and second hand stories of how she isn't a terribly nice person.

Very sad news.

Sorry to hear about your wife as well, daimoni.

Sadly, one can expect certain replies from individuals who don't know when it's inappropriate to open their mouths.

This has got to be a tough time for the Edwards family.

I wish them the best of luck and offer my prayers.

I just had a friend die of cancer. Not a good way to die.

As the son of a 12 year breast cancer survivor, the Komen foundation is my pet charity. I hate to see a mother and wife going through something like this.

It's hard for us men to realize how much emotional pain is involved with something like this. I have a family friend who is currently fighting this monster, and it looks like she is losing. In the neighborhood of my youth, other than my mother, two other mothers have had it in the past 5 years, one has passed.

I hope that Mrs. Edwards stays positive, fights this thing and wins. I obviously don't know anything about the severity of her case, but I hope it as caught early. I am an advocate of full mastectomy instead of lumpectomy simply because I have watched at least three women die after they thought they "got it all." A breast gone is better than a wife and mother gone.

If you believe in any god, put Mrs. Edwards and women like her in your prayers.

I hope everything turns out good for her and her family.

CD Hanks:

I would suggest that you curb your enthusiasm for wishing the worst for someone. None of us wishes that.

Daimoni:

I am very very sorry about your wife. We all wish you and your wife our heartfelt sympathies and wish you both the best. I hope that your wife is able to rise above this disease.

I am also a supporter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I know SO many women who have this disease. It is truly an epidemic. A man does not understand, it is true. Every single time I stand in the shower and wash myself I do a breast exam and it is always with some fear and trepidation. "What will I feel or find?" Imagine living in fear with one part of your body, knowing that one day it may betray you and present a lump. No one, except a woman, knows what it is like to constantly have this fear in the back of their mind. Line up a row of eight women and pick one. One in eight of us is going to get this disease. It is extraordinarily common and lethal. Every woman has this fear. Every single one of us.

More recently, Brett Favre's wife announced two weeks ago that she also has breast cancer. Then there is Melissa Etheridge. Anastasia (the singer). Olivia Newton John had it. There will be many more women to come, those in the public eye...and those in your very own lives.

Let's keep the hope going and if you're ever asked to donate a dollar or two for a breast cancer research team or foundation, do it in the name of those who have fought this disease, are fighting this disease, and those who will one day fight this disease.

Until you know what cancer is or does to someone...wishing it on someone who you've heard stories about not being a nice person is ignorant and about the most callous thing I've heard here in awhile.

Oh please. Knock off the phony high-horse. I find it ironic that daimoni of all people would try and pull a high horse over ļæ½not knowing when itļæ½s inappropriate to open his mouthļæ½, after his crass and tasteless attitude when Reagan died. (Not that he was the only one we saw it from- and I don't recall seeing you chime in against it).

Please, just cut the blatant hypocrisy already.

And of course best wishes for Edwardļæ½s wife.

After reading this thread again, I missed Hanks original post.

CD, I like ya fellow, but that was uncalled for.

No one deserves that sort of thing. No one here is perfect.

I sure hope nothing like that ever happens to you, or someone you love.

I didn't think so.

I don't think that's what CD Hanks REALLY wants her to get sicker either.

And I don't think KarlG was malicious.

But, in the interest of people not misinterpreting my "Some may call it Murphy's Law. I call it Karma" thread, I changed my sig.

We all wish Liz Edwards the best and since she is wealthy and affluent and has access to the best healthcare in the nation, I am sure she will be fine. Let's just wish that those less fortunate (some MUCH less fortunate) can someday have the same access to quality healthcare.

My prayers are with her. She is going through a very though time, surgery (complete masectomy), radiation (which will take some energy from her and make her sick), chemeotherary (which will take away every ounce of energy she ever had, make sick through her stomach, and change her appearance).

Come on. Nobody wishes her ill. That's just bad karma, regardless of your politics.

A real issue though: Her husband's a lawyer, it might be tough to find a doctor. That's the way it is in some places, although I'm sure her fame can overcome some of that bias.

I know that ANYONE associated with attorneys is likely to get turned down by OB/GYNs in TX, secretaries/paralegals/spouses. Is it ethical? No, but PROVE that it happens. Same in West Virginia.

I feel terribly sorry for Mrs. Edwards. I also feel terribly sorry for the state of the US. I sometimes wonder if the US were ever to be faced with a real end of the world scenario, would the people still be fighting one another just before the desaster struck?
But what about POLAND?

We are not "fighting one another." We just ended a great election and decided upon a leader for the next four years. It's all settled for a while now.

95% of the other countries wish they could be in "state" the US is in right now. Excellent economy, low poverty rate, helping other counties both economically and militarily.

How condescending of you.

How presumptuous of you!

How many other countries--or more accurately, citizens of those countries--do you think wish
*for our high budget deficits or our massive national debt?
*to be part of the 40-million without health insurance in this country?
*to live in fear of gun violence because gun ownership is so prevalent here?

So, if you are stating that other countries desire to be like the US why don't
we see these sorts of problems in other developed countries around the world?
Hmmm?!? Why isn't more of the developed world engaging in massive deficit
spending, cutting citizens from health insurance plans, or making access to
firearms much easier? I think your argument has a few holes in it.

No matter what you say, the United States IS the greatest country IN THE WORLD.

We have FREEDOM to do WHATEVER we want.

Yes, it's too bad that our deficit is high, but we are fighting a war and we will recover from our deficit.

Yes, some people do not have health insurance, but if you REALLY want health insurance you CAN get it...go to work for a company that will give it to you. Wal-mart will give it to you. Some people will sneer and turn up their noses at a job at Wal-mart or Sam's Club and say it is beneath them and they'll stay at their current position that cannot or will not give them benefits. That's their choice.

Yes, we have a lot of guns here. But, people commit crimes every single day without guns. The prisons are chock full of people who are in prison for NOT using a gun. Martha Stewart is an example. Crime is EVERYWHERE.

I've lived all over the world and I can tell you, this IS the best country in the world. Listen to John Kerry's concession speech...he said the same. If you don't think it is, then move north. Canada would love to have you.

Cody Dawg, I don't want to pick on you, but using Wal-Mart as an example for getting health insurance was not the best choice. Over 50% of Wal-Mart's employees do not have health insurance, because they can't afford it. Instead they go to publicly funded (your tax dollars) health clinics. As a matter of fact, the California legislature is looking into this issue, because the legislature (your tax dollars) is beginning to see that our tax dollars subsidize Wal-Mart's profits, to the tune of millions of dollars per year. Calpers, the large California pension fund, is also looking into dumping their Wal-Mart stock, as a result of this inquiry.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Allrighty then, like Bush said in the debates, "we have a fundamental disagreement"
about this belief in the United States being the greatest country in the world.

I appreciate your "Love It or Leave It" attitude, though. But Canada is not the
greatest country in the world either. I don't think there IS any one greatest
country. That has been the point I have been trying to make all along.

that is tragic, but all too common. what is often lost in the publicity for breast cancer, however, is that lung cancer kills considerably more women (in the US) each year... of course, it is also more preventable, by living outside urban/industrial areas and not smoking.

That's true? Lung cancer kills more women? Wow. I never knew that. I've never smoked a cigarette in my entire life. (Never cheated on a test, either, both promises made to my grandfather.)

Interesting information.

One thing is for sure: None of us gets out of life alive. It's just a matter of when and how.
