After selling / trading away your cube, have any regrets?

I have a G4/450 Cube and PowerMac 867. Cube has a 15" Studio Display and the Quicksilver has a 17" Studio Display. I'm selling the cube since it's pretty much a moot point to have both, but I have a feeling I'm really going to miss it once it's gone.

They laughed at my Mac, it had no CLI. They laughed at Linux, it had no GUI. I installed MacOS X, and shut them up.

I've struggled with that decision myself.

I have a Cube 500Mhz with 17" Studio Display (LCD).

I'd love to get something else and keep the Cube as a collectable, but it's a pretty expensive thing to collect so I'd probably dump it. But i *REALLY* like it. <GRIN>

- iMac i5 3.2Ghz 1TB
- G4 Cube 500Mhz / Shelf display unit / Museum display

Hi.

If you have both, you already know how you will feel using one over the other.

I couldn't stand using a noisy computer like a QS after owning a Cube, so I'm keeping mine at least until Apple figures out how to make a truly quiet machine again. In fact, I have two: one at home and one at the office. Both still elicit comments from nearly everyone who sees them.

I will probably upgrade the CPU and video card when good options are available. I don't mind being a bit behind the curve. After all, I used my personal PM7500, bought the first day they were available, for well over 5 years. What a great machine that was (I still have it). I hope my Cube serves that well for that long.

-Cheers!

Hi Goatnet

Well, I'm pretty attached to my Cube and I know I'd miss it's quiet operation (despite what Cypher says ). I just stuffed some more RAM into it and it's great for my home office uses. Since you have BOTH you probably already know your own answer...sure you can't use the Cube somewhere else at home or work??

Good luck with your decision (but I know I'd miss mine!).

Dr. No

P.S. I too would wait for a quiet replacement for my Cube (now if the iMac would also support my Cinema Display.....)

Here's another vote for "waiting for a quiet replacement".

At the moment, I have no desire to replace it with something newer or faster.

If I had two computers, I'd run OS 9 on one, and X on the other. Definitely put X on the faster box...

I can't imagine using anything but my Cube. Currently it does all I need it to do (graphics/web/audio), and it does it quietly. I have 1GB ram in it, a large enough HD, and a portable firewiredrive for backup. That and my 17" flatscreen.

With all these GHz adverts all over the place I do sometimes feel I could use something faster, but don't wanna do with the Cube's elegance. So, what I've done is written the various upgrade companies and asked about any planns of building a (dual) upgrade especially for the Cube. No answers yet, but I'll keep waiting

I'm one who replaced my cube
Kinda sad, I really liked it but the allure of a dual gig was just too much, its is louder to be sure but the tower does have more expandability and horse power no regrets.

I think the cube was a wonderful machine. Its a shame it didnt succeed.

The new fp imacs are fantastic though. I love mine - definitely a good cube replacement.

The upgrades will range in speed from 750MHz to 1GHz and in price from $449 to $749. They're based on the 7455 Apollo chip so it should be cooler, but no idea on whether it will require a fan (probably will).

After running Jaguar on my Cube, I'll probably get one of these upgrades and maybe the GeForce 2MX card that's popping up occasionally (for the Quartz Extreme support). After that, I'll most likely be a happy camper. Heck, Jaguar on the standard Cube works pretty well.

I wish they would sell the iMac without the screen. (Just the "orb"). If they did that I'd buy one in about 15 seconds.

But apple is probably trying not to capture the previous powermac/cube market with new imacs - they want them to buy powermacs hehe...
