I have a MacBook and probably like most of you have a Time Machine back up drive. But I dont take it with me everywhere I go. And when the MacBook is at home its set up in a desktop configuration. I didn't want time machine to backup every hour. Once a day is good enough for me. I went in search of a solution and found this little program called Time Machine Editor. It allows you to change when time machine backs up. I have a 500GB Hard drive set up for time Machine. the macbooks 120GB and 250GB external drive. I was able to set Time Machine to backup the macbook and the external 250gb daily at 3 am. Seems to work really well too.

Heres the link

What do you gain by not making hourly backups?
After a week it will only keep a daily backup anyway.

I think it's a good idea. I don't like that Apple seems to make some very important decisions for you instead of giving you the ability to make them for yourself. WHy not have a question like " would you like to set up time machine or have apple do it for you?" kind of thing.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I'm always leery of things like this that change stuff, and often wonder if things could go wrong in the event that something needed to be restored.

I wouldn't mind being able to change the frequency, sometimes I'm actually working, and want it to backup, and sometimes I'm reading, and don't really care.

Well I have a MacBook and its set up for a desktop when im at home. and the time machine drive is on my desk not with me all the time.. So by having it backup daily at 3 am.. It backs it up when im asleep and I dont have my machine on the go.. I like having more control over time machine than apple allows

I want people to think about this.... on the iphone/ ipod touch you have that scrolling analog clock type of setup where you set appointments and such. Why not give that to time machine? Every other backup program on the market for con/pro-sumers has the ability to deeply detail how and when the machine is backed up. We know apple can add this in at any time. To me the exclusion of the feature to setup a basic time and day and type like daily, weekly, monthly... etc... is just what apple does so you buy the next upgrade.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Uhm, according to simple math, you could gain up to 23x7 days of snapshots.

Incredibly unlikely; files that don't changed aren't duplicated. That would require that you have as many file changes per hour for the last week as you have file changes per day for the time period before the last week.
