I just got a 6100 DOS from my job and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on some interesting uses for it. I'd like to be able to run Linux off of it, but I'm not sure what the best version is for it. Right now, I'm just messing with it, but I'd like to make it useful.

im getting a 6100/60 in the next few days. I plan on using it as a dedicated SETI cruncher for Team MacNN.

You could make it into a server or something.

Hmmmm, seti cruncher... that's a good idea. Do you know if there is a SETI client for PPCLinux? Also, my ISP blocks requests on port 80, does anyone know if SETI uses this port?

i think there is a Linux version for it. Check with Scott. (AIM: oneandonlyscott) If you do end up crunching SETI, use the Team's proxy server. Seti.macnn.com, port: 5517

mmmmmm, Setiathome.berkeley.edu doesn't show a Linux Client. There is a Unix version though. www.download.com had some sort of linux thing you might want to check into.

Well, I could always bite the bullet and run OS 8.1... there should be a SETI client for that. Thanks for the proxy ref.

SETI@home requires 7.5.5 or later and 32MB of Physical RAM, ( i recommend more though)

I don't think there is a linuxppc client, but linuxppc doesn't run on a 6100, anyway

Of course there's a linux client for ppc: ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/set...-linux-gnu.tar.
I haven't run mklinux in a while, so I don't remember if this client runs on it, but it's worth a try.

MKLinux is the only Linux flavor that runs on NuBus Macs.

If you are going to connect the 6100 to an ethernet network you will need an aaui transceiver. They usually run less than $10 on eBay.

Here is a site I found a while back that is dedicated to the 6100. It has a lot of information that might be useful to you.

This 6100 can be turned in a nice mailserver for a small to medium office,
using EIMS (Eudora Mail Server),
once you have set it up, it runs the rest of the year without problems ;-)

Actually, LinuxPPC does run on the old NuBus machines now, thanks to these people.
