and gold fittings. I can only imagine what Patek Philippe would charge for that band.

Unless you're buying bullion, like bars or coins*, you're not going to pay actual (or even close to) market value for gold. Ever.

(*and even then it's customary to pay an extra 5-10% CMV in markup and handling)

Regardless, that doesn't justify the insane mark-up. They just grabbed numbers out of thin air for the pricing on the Apple WATCH Edition. They were probably laughing as they did so.

From what I understand about the gold Apple uses, it's 18K gold that has been treated in some way to make it much harder (thus more scratch-resistant) than off-the-shelf 18k gold. This, at least in part, might account for the silly pricing.

As I said earlier, the point of the band is to indicate how good you are at wasting money. The target market prefers it to be overpriced, otherwise it isn't serving its purpose.

For luxury watches, those are actually very reasonably priced.

99% of the people here are not the target market for those watches.

No.

The MARKET accounts for the "silly" pricing. A three- or fourfold markup over material value seems perfectly cromulent.

It isn't often that you and I agree, but we do on this! I have a friend who has several watches that are in the 20K + range!

Apparently the pricing isn't "silly", due to the fact the first wave of Editions sold out in <half an hour.

No, they didn't, they researched what 18k conventional watches sell for and priced them accordingly. (Truth be told, they're less than most others.)

In a sense they really ought to be substantially less than other gold watches. You spend twenty grand on something swiss and water resistant, you still have a beautiful, functional timepiece 20 years later. An Apple Watch is going to be an expensive bracelet in 5 years time. Certainly 10.

I still believe they'll have a program where you can upgrade the guts of the Watch.

So I ordered the Apple Watch on the 10th.
I noticed an email from my credit card company this morning with a $75 charge from Apple.
I called Apple and they said they charged my card for the AppleCare+ I ordered at the same time.
They tell me the charge will remain in pending until the Watch ships (sometime this century).
I tell Apple it's damn disturbing to see a charge out of the blue from Apple.
They tell me it's to make sure the money is available on the card when the Watch ships.
I tell them: WTF?
How does a pending charge for AppleCare+ guarantee the card will have enough available credit when the device finally ships?
The rep said if they removed the pending charge, the order would be cancelled.
I said Oh, so now you're threatening me with an order cancellation because I don't appreciate the ridiculous flawgic behind the pending charge.
They did the same thing back in 2000 when I ordered a Cube. That time they actually charged my credit card (not just a pending trx) for AppleCare even though the Cube had not yet been shipped.
I just don't get why they need to fiddle around with my credit card account until they ship the product.
Anybody else have this 'problem'?

When you go to the gas station, they charge $1. They do the real charge later. It's just to make sure your card isn't stolen or something. This isn't new.

Apple is making sure you have the money. It's as simple as that. They're also making sure you don't overcharge on your card.

Yes. I understand how that works. But the Watch won't ship for 2 months or more so how does this charge prove I will have the money when it ships?
Look, I'm not trying to be a pain-in-the-patootie here but it's not the same as buying gas.

There's a soft hold on that money until it ships.

IOW, it affects your available credit until shipment, but doesn't affect actual credit until it ships.

How does a soft hold of $75 ensure your card is good for $400+?

The soft hold is for $400 plus.

If I understand Apple's model correctly, the AppleCare ships "immediately", thus the $75 isn't soft. He's been hard charged for that because it's shipped.

Reread the post, there's no mention of a soft charge for the full price of the watch, only the Applecare.

It is available online, but no one has checked at a store, because that would require going out in public and leaving our basements, which is terrifying.

Just got back from a tryout at the Apple Store.

Came away more impressed than I thought I would. I actually prefer the matte finish of the aluminum over the shiny stainless steel, so that's a bonus. I was not that impressed with the "taptic" engine. It didn't feel like a tap as much as a more focused vibration. The watch looks better in person than in photos/videos. It's smaller than you think it is.

The interface is weird and feels like it would take a bit to get used to it. Feels fiddly and not very obvious. I really don't have a lot to say one way or another, because it's hard to get a good impression from dinking around with it for 10 minutes with someone else's fake content. I came away wanting one more than I did when I went in, but I still feel fine waiting for revision 2. Because the truth is that this would just be a toy for me, and definitely not something I actually need.

I'll tell you what did blow me away. The new Macbook. So small and tight. Looks really good in person. The trackpad feels just like a regular trackpad, which is amazing. The keyboard is a little wonky, but whatever, I don't type that much, so it wouldn't be a big deal. At the end of the day, it's just a Macbook, but it's tiny and looks great. The space grey one isn't that different from the aluminum, but looks really good.

I just don't fit the laptop profile.

Either I need max. horsepower and screen real estate, or my phone/pad covers it. No real inbetween.

Yeah I understand. For what I do all day I don't need max horsepower. So even though it can't compete with the latest MBA or MBP ... the initial reports say that the CPU is on par with a Late-2011 MBA. That along with a more RAM, a faster SSD, and a faster GPU means it'll be a step up for me. So on top of that I get silent operation (haven't had that since my G4 Cube!), a Retina display, Force Touch, and it can drive a 4K monitor. I'm looking forward to plugging that baby into a 4K monitor instead of the 1080p monitor I use for screen real estate. Though I will probably run it in Retina mode for the higher DPI. We'll see which I prefer once I get it. The only thing that sucks for me as it stands now is that Apple didn't include a DisplayPort version of their multi-port adapter. So I will have to use HDMI which can only drive a 4K monitor at 30hz. We'll see if I can live with that temporarily or just hold off on the 4K monitor for a while.

You can sign up for a 15 minute try-out session. They have a drawer with a whole bunch of different combos you can try on. An employee stays with you and talks you through everything while you try on the watches. The ones you try on are just on a demo video loop, but they also have a little plastic stand dealie with a full functional watch you can play with. I was little worried the guy they had shadow you would be annoying or pressure you, but that was not the case at all. I told him I wasn't going to buy one yet and I was just a curious nerd and he pretty much just let me do my thing.
