All the new apple monitors use new adapter. I don't remember the name of it. The old G4 can not use that. Is there any new graphic card for G4 with the new adapter for using new monitor?

Not at this time. With sufficent interest, a solution (albeit expensive) to use any SVGA or DVI video card with a new Apple Display of respective kind may become available.

Until then, check out the links to the video card makers included in the article; there *might* be a solution soon from Promax.

A new graphic card with an ADC connection is sold right at the Apple Store. Under "Accessories" and "Other," you can pick up the "Radeon Kit for Power Mac G4" for $249 US.

Apple does sell an ADC graphics card, but it will not power an ADC moniter if your G4 is a pre-MWNY 2000 machine (G4 gigabyte). The machines designed to work with the ADC graphic cards have a small connection in line with the AGP slot that accepts a small slot on the ADC graphics card. It is that slot that provides the electrical power to run the moniter. So if you don't have a Gigabyte G4 or one of the new CDRW G4's, and ADC graphics card will not work with an ADC moniter. If you want a new Apple moniter, you have to have a relatively new G4.

Exactly! For Apple to sell the ADC OEM graphics cards as separate items is really misleading. The ADC connector does you absolutely no good unless you put the card into a Mac that had another ADC card in it already! It is NOT a way to use a new monitor with an older Mac.

What I want to know, is how to use a 21" svga monitor with the new Macs. Apple doesn't currently offer 21" CRT displays, and the LCD version is WAYYYYY to expensive. I know that I could just buy a retail AGP radeon and get the svga connector but I'm thinking 5 or more years from now. If I invest in a nice 21" CRT I don't want to have to buy another monitor for 5 or more years, maybe longer. The only reason I'm even considering it is because my 17" Apple Studio Display is perfectly fine but has been rendered useless with the new Macs because of it's insistance on a ADB signal to power on. I have no desire to have to sell highly depriciated hardware that would be perfectly fine for my uses, if it'd only work with my damn computer. Oh yea KVM switch's with a PC would be nice.

For the ADB signal, may be you can try buying an ADB to USB converter. You can then connect it to the USB port. Please let me know if it works.

There are several USB KVM switches that came out recently. Only problem is you need third party software to get NT to support USB.

What I want to know, is how to use a 21" svga monitor with the new Macs.

All new Powermacs made since January 1999 include an SVGA connector on the same card as the Apple Video or Apple Display Connector ports. You may only use one port at a time, but this means that all shipping monitors, as well as all legacy monitors are supported.

The only reason I'm even considering it is because my 17" Apple Studio Display is perfectly fine but has been rendered useless with the new Macs because of it's insistance on a ADB signal to power on.

If your ASD is based on SVGA (1/1999-7/2000), it will hook up directly to the SVGA port of any new Mac; if it has an old-style Apple Video connector (pre-1999), it will require an inexpensive adapter. The ADB support will require a USB-ADB adapter, and I assure you it works just fine.

Cheers
