For those who can't afford the LCDs from Apple but want big screen size and absolutely hate beige should think about getting the new Sony 21" CRT. Not bad when sitting beside the QuickSilver

Exactly what model is that?

I put a 17" Sony 200ES (bought it at a blowout from MacMall.com for like $200 in 1999) on my B&W G3. I also didn't want to spend a lot for an Apple monitor, and the 17" that apple was selling at the time boasted a Trinitron display, so I got the same thing for less than 1/2 price.

Is that monitor 4:3, or is it one of those 16:10 monitors?

Damn, Leonis. That's a nice setup. By the way, how much does that display cost?

The one shown on photo is 4:3....there are two models (forgot the exact model name) The cheaper one costs $800-$900 US and the higher end one (in photo) costs almost $1400US. Keep in mind that these monitor are superb in image, color, etc. Many other cheaper 21 incher of other brands can't come close...plus they are in beige case

The difference between the two is the maximum resolution (2000 something vs 2400 something) and the controll buttons look nicer in the higher model.

There also is a 16:9 version....but it cost $2000 US! .....if this is the case we better pay $400 US more for the 22" Cinema Display

BTW....I don't actually own this setup. I am still happy with my 21" Graphite Apple Studio Display ...... however, I do find my G4/450 is getting so damn slow....especially after my brother got the new K7 PC

The Vision Master Pro 451 from iiyama is also a good shaped non beige screen that also goes very well with the Quiksilver, but its 19inch and is also flat. I have seen an iiyama display at a friend and the image quality very crisp and clear.

there is whole review with nice pics over here

I dunno, the Sony Widescreen is still a better display, IMHO, that the Cinema. IIRC, the Cinema Display only does 1600X1024. The Sony will do 2304X1440. I run my 19" Sony E400 at 1600X1200 now and only paid $450 for it. I'd been darned if I'd pay an extra $2000 for less screen real estate. I'm sure the Cinema Display is purty, but for $700 less, I'd take the Sony 24" over the Cinema Display anyday.

The viewable area of that Sony wide screen CRT is 22.5"...its only half inch more.

When looking for CRT you also need to look at the viewable area.

I've got the GW-900 and the max resolution is 1920x1200/75 Hz, wich is absolutely the max I would use on even this monster. For some reason I candt choose the 1600x1024 resolution, wich would be perfect when not wearing my contact lenses......

I have heard there are problems with getting the Sony widescreen (I believe the model is FW900) to cooperate with the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX. Is this really the case? Anybody have firsthand knowledge?

I just purchased a G4/867 and I'm thinking of buying the Sony widescreen CRT to go with it...but the last thing I need is some incompatibility problem.

I actually like my 19" Samsung 955DF, although i can't run 1600x1200 at a decent refresh rate (65hz), and the text is a teeny blurry on the corners, you can't beat the price, $250 after rebates.

That's pretty cool though, i think the G420 looks nice as well (but a little out of my price range, $450 something for 19").

Looking good.

When I got my G4, I got a Sony HMD A200 monitor. It has a flat screen and a native resolution of 1024 x 768 which is great for a 17in monitor. Flat screen and silver...hmmmm tasty. It also has four USB ports.

Very worth checking out if you are thinking of getting a G4 and not blowing loads of cash on an overpriced Apple monitor.

I disagree that the Apple monitors are overpriced. I haven't seen any 17" LCD displays that compare in quality to the Apple Studio Display, and Apple's price is right on target. The 22" LCD is especially competitive. For example, the largest LCD display offered by Dell is 21" NEC-Mitsubishi MultiSync, and Dell sells it for $4704.95...almost twice what Apple charges for a larger (and better IMO) display.

I do agree that Apple needs a monitor in the $300-$500 price range, though. Eventually the 15" LCD should drop to that range. I noticed that Apple added a third-party CRT display to the Apple Store...probably in reponse to the fact that LCDs are a bit pricey.

I agree that the silver Sony's look nice with the QS. However, do the Sony monitors still have those two lines that run across the screen? I used to have a trinitron display and the lines seemed to get more noticeable as the display aged. So, after reading the review on Cnet, I opted for the new Apple 17" LCD with my new QS. I hesitated because of the price, but I think my eyes will thank me (no flicker!!!)

The studio where I work has three GDM-FW900, the wide-aspect one that Leonis showed--very, very nice. It can be had for around $1800 on-line.

The Apple Cinema Display, with its dropping in price, though, is the one I prefer for a simple reason: weight. The Sony is 70 lbs. heavier than the ADC, and there is no easy way to grab the motherscratcher.

I'll live with 1600x1024 and save my back--a 27" TV is enough .

By the way, you can get the Sony GDM-F520 (the 21" monitor pictured at the beginning) for $1,430.06 with free shipping from Dell by using a 10% off code floating around...a great price for this monitor!
