I am about to do a fresh re-install of OSX including erasing the hard-drive first and I was just making sure I'm not missing anything I need to backup. So far I have my entire home folder, and the "PreferencePanes" folder from the root library. Both are copied onto my iPod temporarily.

Is that all I need? I keep thinking I'm forgetting something.

Why do you back up the PreferencePanes folders?

If you have all your personal data saved in your home folder as suggested you need to backup only that.
What about all your applications? Do you have the install CDs and registration codes at hand? Any shareware you don't want to re-download after installation?
Internet access settings and passwords are stored outside your home folder. Did you write them down?
Anything in /Users/Shared you like to keep? iTMS purchased music backed up properly?

"Why do you back up the PreferencePanes folders?"
Becaue i have downloaded several 3rd party pref panes, such as Synergy, and iKey. some of them install in the "home/library/preferencepanes" folder and some install in the root level "harddrive/library/preferencepanes"
So, I wanted to keep those.

Yeah, I got that, stuff now. Thanks for reminding me.

nah, setting up airport is easier than falling of a log.

Anything in /Users/Shared you like to keep?
nope.

iTMS purchased music backed up properly?
its on my ipod, am i am planing on retreiving it via a nifty shareware app called iPodRip

[EDIT] where are my safari bookmarks stored? I don't want to loose those.

He already said he backed up his entire home folder.

By the way, if you're interested in keeping a backup on your iPod, you should try my app, iPodBackup .

Applications + Application Support. Saves you the hassle of reinstalling everything. Don't forget there are 2 App Support folders.

Basically there's a lot of stuff in your Library folders that you need.

Check iPodRip. The latest version of iTunes really handicapped it. I could only pull back about 90% of my iPod stuff when doing my monthly backup this past weekend. I tried about 3 other apps including PodUtil. 90% recovery of some 6,000 songs was the best I could do, and 3 kernal panics (my first ever on my PB) while trying to pull stuff back.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Well, he still wanted to know where it was. (See post above my original post.) Apparently, he wasn't sure if they were there or not.
