I have this problem with bootcamp on leopard being unable to create a partition for windows.
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved
Previously I had bootcamp and windows xp on my MBP but I removed it because I was not using windows much and deleted the previous FAT32 partition using disk utility. So this is the second time to install windows xp. Would I correct in assuming that files that cannot be moved are leftover files from the previous windows installation?
Bootcamp recommends backing up and reformatting the disk to fix the problem, but I would rather find a quicker and less expensive solution.....?
cheers

You should have used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition previously instead of Disk Utility. That may be why you are having problems.
You may be able to use Disk Utility to recreate the Windows partition, but I'm not sure how it will work. Somebody else should chime in on this.

You can use anything you like to create a partition to put Windows onto on your Intel Mac. Boot Camp just happens to make the process less difficult. It also makes the removal process almost totally painless. I believe it will delete a full Windows partition if you ask it to. Plus it provides all the drivers you need for Windows to properly use your Mac hardware.
So if you can get your new partition created, you should be able to just boot from the Windows install CD and go with it. But be very careful not to tell Windows to install in your OS X partition!

thanks for the response, and sorry for the late reply to you all for you comments, I have been busy with exams. But I would still like to sort this out without re-formatting my disk.
So Ghporter, your suggestion is to create a partition with something other than bootcamp (e.g disk utility?) and then install windows as per normal? What about those drivers .... can I skip to the step that bootcamp makes a driver disk without going through the partitoning process...??
I'll check it out this weekend... cheers!

If you're using Leopard, there is no driver disc to be burned; it's on the Leopard install disc. If you're still on Tiger using Boot Camp beta, you will have to set the clock to before Dec. 31, 2007 in order to get it to work. After that, you can bypass the step about burning a disc and proceed directly into starting the Windows installer.
