I think it will continue on the same path for 2 or 3 years before the userbase starts to fade.

But I really don't think a profiting company like Apple has anything to worry about.

And your topic title sucks. I think that phrase is stupid.

Frankly, if Apple goes under, we will all have bigger things to worry about than the future of MacNN.

yeah ... not the gorgeous paperweight on my desk .. (it'd be the most beautiful paperweight i'd ever have touched (and YES i'd still use it for everything until the whole powerbook disintegrates)

but .... the worry comes with having to use windows again ..

I think that you have a failed premise. Apple will be around long after I'm gone.

Linux on a Sony VAIO? Really? But which distribution will supply the drivers for the jogdials, memory stick readers, and other value-added features? Yellow Dog Linux doesn't work on a VAIO.

Mark my words: Apple will never flop; they have too many die-hard loyal users. But even if that were to happen, we'd probably keep coming back here for laughs. And to keep starring in the best running comedy ever in existence.

There's a little company in NC that makes a small Linux distribution for PCs: RedHat Linux. (Actually, it's the Linux that Yellow Dog is based on. Terrasoft adds some of the Apple-specific support.) I'd bet that the Linux community already has jog-dial support for VAIOs.

If Apple dies... well obviously then we all switch to Linux and/or Windows. I would hate for Apple to die but both Linux and Windows do mostly work even if they are both more complicated and have more problems than OSX. Although Windows gets religiously flamed by Mac zealots, the majority of companies and home users world wide use it and do manage to get most of their stuff done, even if it isn't as pleasant an experience as OSX is.

Also, x86 isn't all bad. The Centrino mobile chips are pretty damn good and they are better at power saving than PPC at the moment, and the AMD x86-64 seem to offer very good performance as well.

Even Longhorn, which will eventually come out, be it in 2006 or 2007, will probably offer some real improvements over XP, and have a similar floating windows experience to what OSX offers.

It won't be the end of the world.

But I seriously doubt that Apple is going to die anytime soon, especially if Apple follows some of the basic steps that it has been doing in recent years, such as
A. Keep increasing the total OSX/Mac userbase, even if this doesn't translate into overall marketshare in the computer world.
B. Keep coming out with real innovative services and products such as the iPod and iTMS.
C. Make sure that their competitors don't manage to kill successful stuff such as iTMS, which is something that Microsoft would really love to do.
